4.0 out of 5 stars Some must haves and some anthropological oddities, October 15, 2006
By Donald H. Mitchell "dhm" (Arlington, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some of these pieces everyone should have a recording of--Louis Armstrong's Mack the Knife, Billy Holiday's Fine and Mellow, and Betty Roche's Take the A Train. Some of these are slightly less known jewels--Lee Wiley's Street of Dreams, Sarah Vaughan's Mean to Me, Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross's Charleston Alley. Some are must-haves which may be much less prevalent: Betty Carter's scat singing on Frenesi! Hot Lips Page singing an anachronist but yet sounding like our rap-star posturing of today--There ain't no flies on me. Some are very odd to today's ears and sensibilities: the drink buying song "Hey Bartender", Rushing's raucous "Russian Lullaby", & Hawkin's "Oooh-wee!".
