"Johhny Horton Makes History" tracks,
By Kevin J Simon (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1956-60 (Audio CD)
This boxed set is special because it is the ONLY way to own and hear ALL the tracks from Johnny Horton's greatest and BEST selling LP: "Johnny Horton Makes History" As a farm boy growing up in the 50's, my brother and I learned and memorized EVERY song from this GREAT LP. We then were required by our elementary school teachers to sing these special songs on demand for ANY class in our rural K-12 school. And sing them we did. These Johhny Horton songs remain an IMPORTANT and LASTING link to my childhood and along with the American Civil War Centenial of 1961 kindeled a life-long love of history. I am now a High School History teacher and still use these songs to entertain and TEACH my students.KJSIMON

Johnny Comes Back To Life!,
By Daniel J. McCartney (Toledo, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Johnny Horton - 1956-1960 (Audio CD)
I've been a diehard Johnny Horton fan my entire life, which always made my taste in music kind of odd to my friends, since I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I distinctly recall the very first time I ever heard of Johnny Horton; I overheard my mother singing "The Battle Of New Orleans' as a kid back in 1975, and I've been hooked ever since! These powerful collections put out by the Bear Family provided me with songs and history on Johnny that I had been searching for all of my life. I could have researched him forever, but without these box sets, my efforts would have been in vain. Johnny Horton 1956-1960 will provide you with wonderful listening and the enclosed booklet, with biography and pictures, will truly bring Johnny back to life!Dan McCartney djmcdale@aol.com Toledo, Ohio

If you want it all, you'll get it.,

If you love Johnny Horton this set is the one to get. Bear Family does a great job of putting together collections of music of great artists and rare recordings. This set has 4 CDs all with over 70 minutes of great quality recordings. There's alot of tracks that I havn't heard of on any of the other albums. His hits like Jim Bridger and North to Alaska are awesome, and there's alot more Johnny out there. This albums got some great cover tunes, like Woody Guthrie's the sinking of the Reuben James, or Horton's version of Rock Island Line, alternate takes like the British version of the Battle of New Orleans where they "chase them Yank's back to New Orleans", an early version of North to Alaska called Go North (with extra verses),and CD 4 has alot of accoustic and solo songs. This set also includes a 125 page 12x12 booklet covered with full page photos. The book has lots of great information and stories about Johnny. If you like Johnny Horton, don't joke around and get "THE" collection right here.

This is an excellent rare collection of Johnny Horton's music! It contains nearly all of the songs that Johnny recorded or that anyone would care to listen to. All of his hits and many of his non-hits (though still interesting songs: i.e., "Miss Marcy") are here. Alternate versions of his hits, such as "Sink the Bismarck" and "The Battle of New Orleans," are also on this collection. Additionally, the 124 page biographical booklet, filled with photographs both famous and rare, humanizes the artist in a way that no conventional collection of his greatest hits ever could. A word to the wise: order this collection used if you can. Not only can you get a reduced price, but you may have trouble ordering it any other way. Whatever price you pay, this collection is well worth the expense!!!

This set is a must for anyone who is a serious popular music fan. The songs that Johnny Horton recorded in this short (too short!) 4 year span are nothing less than breathtaking in their energy, passion, enthusiasm, and obvious love of life. This is easlily one of the most vital and important collections of post-war American music ever assembled. Highly, highly recommended!!!

I've been listening to these great songs ever since I was a kid and my dad bought me the "Sink the Bismarck" on 45RPM. I saw this about 15 yrs ago at a spot for imports and had to have it. My dad and I split the cost and never looked back. I reminds me of much easier living!
Buy it if you like any of these songs, you'll love them all.

Listen to "Cherokee boogie" Also his voice was good at ballads"Whispering pines" He also wrote and sang cowboy songs, listen to "The streets of dodge". You can almost feel the breeze of Dodge city when you listen to it.This is Johnny Horton at his best, what a voice he had. Extreme good sound on all these recordings as always from Bear Family Records. It is worth the money, buy it and enjoy it!

Johnny Horton Box Set,
By Jess "Jess" (Coal Country, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1956-60 (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of Johnny Horton since I began to seriously listen to music. And while his historical songs (which he is known best for) are excellent and will long remain part of America Pop Culture, his honky-tonk and true Country Music are every bit as good. I've been able to pick up a Johnny Horton CD here and there, but nothing which covered his earliest LP's in their entirety. Well, here it is; and since it's a Bear Family Product, it is outstanding. Actually, I'm glad to be able to finally put away the vinyl and the decades of scratches.....I almost forgot just how good his early stuff is. As with all of their box sets, a detailed booklet is included with info you wont find anywhere else. The price is surprisingly affordable (considering the usual cost of Bear Family products....and no, I'm not complaining). While there is a 2-CD Columbia/Legacy Collection available (and of good quality), it does not go nearly as deep as this set. So, this is really a "must-have" for the true Johnny Horton fan. Highly recommended.

salute to a great country legend!,
By
This review is from: Johnny Horton - 1956-1960 (Audio CD)
Johnny Horton's music was unique and still is today. This collection is an excellent salute to a country legend that (in my opinion) would have made it straight to the top if his life had not been cut short. This collection might have been better if it contained all of his songs and was packaged in a more wearproof container (like leatherbound or metal) because it is,after all,a keepsake more than just a listening pleasure.
