Biography

The American blues rock band Canned Heat, were formed in 1965 in California. They are probably best known for Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson's distinctive high pitched vocals, singing "Goin' up the Country" and "On the Road Again".

They released their self titled debut album after an appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, but it was their follow-ups that brought them their greatest success.

5.0 out of 5 stars The great late Alan Wilson is on the road again!, December 13, 2002

According John Lee Hooker and me the best white bluesman ever exists. He is playing on this double CD with the best bluesband ever exists Canned Heat. For ever thanks to the man who found the tapes. Many never released versions of beautiful songs. I can not stop listening to so much warm and splendid performed blues music. I ever hope to get "Canned Heat live on Woodstock'69" or "Canned Heat live on the VPRO-Picnic Festival in Holland'70".

4.0 out of 5 stars Music from the Grave!, October 7, 2000
This review is from: 1967-1976: Boogie House Tapes (Audio CD)
Having followed Canned Heat from the early 60's, I was excited to see new music from their "pinnacle" years. Some tracks=Great! Other tracks= Not too hot. Bob "The Bear" Hite is at his best in the studio banter between songs, but the lack of Henry "The Sunflower" Vestine on too many songs makes this a "made-for-money" compilation. For my money, Living the Blues still stands out as their best effort, along with the live "Live from the Topanga Corral" album, soon to be re-released as "Live from the Kalaidascope" this month (October 2000) True Canned Heat fans will eat this album up, mostly because there is so little Alan Wilson material that has not been released. Worth the low price, though, I have to admit.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the vaults of Boogie..., November 11, 2004
By
Brett Lemke (www.maximumink.com) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1967-1976: Boogie House Tapes (Audio CD)
The Boogie House Tapes Vol. 1 is a series of live and unreleased recordings spanning the first decade of Canned Heat. From the vaults of Fito de la Parra and "Dr. Boogie", the tracks contained are live versions and alternate takes of many of the classics. The live versions of "Pulling Hair Blues" and "London Blues" show off Alan's wailing harmonica and cracking voice flowing up and down the vocal register. "Human Condition" features a clear recording Alan singing the track live to a reactive audience in Europe 1970. Bob "The Bear" Hite notoriously sets the tone for the evening from the beginning of the first CD, and brings you right into the concert. I reccomend this set to every person who mentions Canned Heat because it captures their unique chemisty and is a great introduction to the band's 35+ year presence for under $13. - www.cannedheatmusic.com.
