I agree with the reviewer from Florida. Maynard's best years and tightest band was the 13 piece group he led in the 1960s. He needs to front a band of no fewer than 13 musicians. Some of the Willie Maiden, Don Sebesky, Don Menza charts should be rerecorded. Maynard is a legend. This CD was recorded when he was at his apex. Unbelievable chops!

maynard is crisp and on the mark. The Canadian band is tight and Maynard excells probably because of the new members. Make no mistake these cats are good. Its nice to have Maynard augment the band with vibes and guitar, Nice solos. If they stayed together for a period of time it would be one of his finest bands. I only wish Maynard would front a BIG band and play some of his older charts

This CD shows a Maynard between his valiant, almost hysterically talented screaming self and his later, disco-obsessed jazz hybrid, read Chamelean; a jazz and blues CD by a seasoned jazz giant with chops for days. His Frame for the Blues by the great Slide Hampton is a close match for his Roulette version from the late 50's, which was singled out as one of his own favorite recordings in an interview conducted with MF 10 years ago. Here you have a sound that hasn't so much mellowed-- it never really did THAT-- as it was more mature, just a little less frantic.

One thing Maynard always possesed in spades was talent, and that's evident in even his worst work as well as his later more poignent CD's, the last of which is a treasure (The One and Only) featuring some of his greatest sidemen. 1967 is a wonderful snapshot worth keeping in the quiver.

THIS ALBUM WAS RECORDED IN MONTREAL DURING EXPO '67. THE BAND IS ALL CANADIAN, AND WHILE THEY ARE TECHNICALLY COMPETENT, THEY DON'T SWING AS HARD AS MAYNARD'S BRITISH OR AMERICAN BANDS.
