Editorial Reviews

One of the best live albums of all time is about to get considerably better. The Allman Brothers Band's cornerstone LP, At Fillmore East, compiled from the four sets recorded on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971, has been expanded, stretching over six CDs with fifteen unreleased tracks. Additionally, The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings contains the complete June 27 performance during the iconic venue-s final weekend, after the band was handpicked by impresario Bill Graham to headline closing night. The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings captures the most inspired improvisational rock unit ever at the peak of their prodigious powers, blazing their way through extended instrumental elaborations, so taut and virtuosic, that the crowds that packed the Fillmore East on those memorable nights were utterly transfixed. When it came to live performance, no other band could touch the Allmans.

'The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings' includes 37 tracks, 15 previously unreleased and a 36 page booklet with extended liner notes and never-before-seen images of the Fillmore concerts.

Quick comparison to other CD versions of the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East. I won't comment on the great music, nor details about their contents, just general sound quality. I listened to them all over a Denon DVD-3910 so that I could include the SACD and 5.1 versions.

1992 "The Fillmore Concerts" mixed by Jay Mark and mastered by Dan Kincaid, produced by Tom Dowd. The sound is pretty thin and flat, and fairly bright, with two extra tracks.

2003 "Delux Edition" mastered by Suha Gur, produced by Bill Levenson. The sound is cleaner with more dynamic range and depth of soundstage. More open and much better bass. This is the best 2 channel version of the original album with six extra tracks.

2004 "SACD" 5.1. Mixed by Jeff Glixman with Carl Cadden-James. 5.1 mastered by Bob Ludwig. 2 channel mastered by Suha Gur. Producers; Paul Bishow, Michel Etchart and Bill Levenson. Good surround imaging and offers the most pleasing sound and presentation of the bunch, but I wish it had a bit more Berry Oakley in the mix and some extra tracks.

2014 "The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings". Compilation by Bill Levenson. Mixed and mastered by Kevin Reeves. The sound is flat, drums are low and the limiting applied makes it sound closed down, losing the live concert feel. However, you have much more music from the incredible concert series, so I'll take it joyfully. It should be noted that the 6 CD version is housed in a nice, but odd size (9.5" x 11.75") book.

THIS A REVIEW OF THE 2014, 6 CD EDITION OF FILLMORE EAST.

"I had more out-of-body experiences at the Fillmore East than I did anywhere else." Jaimoe, ABB.

Grumblings aside (I too own the original vinyl versions of this concert, the 2 CD Fillmore East set, the 2 CD "Eat A Peach" album, both "Deluxe" versions of the previous two albums, the expanded "Fillmore Concerts" edition, the two volume anthologies of D.Allman, and the "Dreams" box set), am I happy I now have this 6 CD overview of these gigs? Well--yes--simply because this is some of the best live recordings in any genre of music. It just rocks. It soars. And listening to all six discs of this powerful, exciting music is even more stunning than before. I remember when the ABB released their first album to relatively much acclaim, then "Idlewild South", and then the live Fillmore East set. The excitement of hearing that original live vinyl set is still with me all these years since then. And having even more from that series of gigs is very close to that original feeling. But if you're reading this you know what I mean. I was lucky enough to hear the ABB several times in both my town and in the Bay Area, around the time of the original vinyl albums. And this set brings back that same feeling of excitement and wonder at just how good this band could be.

The various unreleased tunes from the March 12th gig add an exciting depth to something I didn't think could get much better. And adding the set from the Fillmore East closing gives this expanded edition even more firepower and excitement.

I know there are some out there, that would consider this box set overkill, but I'd ask them to consider the group in question. Each disc on this set may contain the same songs almost, but each version is different than the one that came before. The original line up of The Allman Brothers Band were experts on the live stage, and this set is the quintessential example of their strength in the field. It's fitting that they cited Miles Davis as an influence because this version of the band, along with Miles, are the only people who could improvise and jam for near 30 minutes and not bore the life out of you. This set never bores. And any chance to hear unreleased Duane Allman, dueling with Dickey Betts, is never overkill. It's a gift. Savor it.

This box set is a bonanza for Duane Allman and Dickey Betts guitar groupies. Here in one place is all the solo variations and full jams for study and practice. Seems Duane and Dickey never played the same solo twice, Sure, they follow the same basic melody structure of the song, but there are many variations that are fascinating to hear.

Plus we get the full "horns" sets of March 12. I don't find them distracting at all, although legend has it that Tom Dowd hated them so we didn't get to hear them on the original release. Kind of nice to hear something different tho.

You might look at the track listing and think, "Why do I need four live versions of the same song?" There are many interesting variations in the jams and solos that keep it all interesting to listen to, even at one sitting. In fact maybe you should allow yourself the luxury of doing just that at least once.

I've been an ABB listener and fan for some time, and I've listened to the original At Fillmore release about a bazillion times in the last 30 to 40 years. Quite frankly this is the best American rock band of all time at their peak. Don't miss it.

I wish that somebody would officially release the New Orleans "Warehouse" show from Sept. 71 (with cleaned up sound), with that wonderful version of "Blue Sky" on it.

When is too much enough?
There is never such a thing of "too much" of Duane playing live. Never.

I agree with BOB
I agree with Mark. We all have the released a d re-released ABB at Fillmore East. Why don't they just put together a package of the extra tracks?
Jul 17, 2014 by billybones |  See all 2 posts
Too bad its not just a release of the extra cuts
yes, a release of the fifteen cuts woud be ideal and much more user friendly.
