4.0 out of 5 stars hip hop lovers, it's a solid check it.
Alright I don't speak spanish but I know flow, and I understand production. And on this album, she has flow. Production is a little uneven and varied, though generally within a narrow band-- as in mostly mid-tempo, golden-age-of-hip hop jams and traditional verses and hooks without the fancy electronic production and the vocoder fads here. Particularly, there's a...

I heard this on NPR too and on a whim ordered it. I am not a hip hop fan or a rap person, but I do like tracks I and II. I don't speak Spanish but my wife who is fluent assures me that the lyrics are well written and have a positive message. I was hoping for more French Lyrics, and I think only one song has them? Ana has a very strong voice and is quite capable. I...

Particularly, there's a reggae beat, an underground hiphop uptempo beat, an orchestra sampled beat, a mc battle beat, jazzy boom-bap beat, abstract minimal jazzy hooked boom bap beat, traditional under tempo'ed groove R+B beat, etc...

So I say this with the utmost honesty: if you're a hip hop fan, you will love this album, even if you don't understand spanish.

Standouts are Mar Adentro, Sube, Oulala [where she raps in french (i might not know much, but i know that it ain't spanish and it ain't english)], and Problem de 2.

Oh yeah, and I hear that her lyrics are pretty deep in substance and complicated in form.

Heard about her on NPR. Interesting background which greatly influences her sound and lyrics. Previewed a few of her songs and decided to buy the album... So Far, im pretty impressed.... Intelligent lyrics without that modern-day hip hop meaningless "bling jibberish" feel if that makes any sense.

I really enjoyed Tijoux's music. I'd still be listening to it if I hadn't given it away in a fit of desire to share it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality spanish hip-hop, August 30, 2010

Being a person that loves the Soulquarians and the Ummah, this album is surprisingly reminiscent of that era in hip-hop, conscious rapping and amazing beats. Adding to that is a near-perfect technique that Ana possesses and a voice that brings to mind people like Bahamadia or Ladybug Mecca.

It is not easy to find latin/hispanic rappers around the world that are not all up in the "gangsta" or "cholo" image. Even those that don't, put too much effort on sounding hard. That limits their flow and lyrics, even the beats. And Ana shows much versatility in her style, and taste in music. Once you take a listen at her first album Kaos, and then 1977 you can clearly see that she is always trying something different.

This is one of those albums that lifts my heart up in this dark era in Hip-Hop, where to find good hip-hop you have to dig underground or look overseas...

5.0 out of 5 stars if you're REALLY into hip hop, September 8, 2011
This review is from: 1977 (MP3 Download)
If you complain about the backsliding hip hop has suffered in the past 10 plus years this is your album. No Habla espanol? No problemo.

Anas "flow" is universally understood. Plus you need to work your brain a bit and learn Spanish anyway.

"1977" is the work of a woman who is a incredible MC. She rhymes about things that matter. Politics, love, life. She's a thinking persons MC.

She's in her mid 30s and it's a bonus. You don't get Niki Minaj punchlines ( thank god ). Her voice is sexy beyond words. If you're a Drake or Kanye fan you probably won't understand this album. If you're fuming that real Hip Hop never gets the attention it deserves than Ana will make you happy you opened your wallet. Contention for album of the year in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Music, caught me off gurd., December 25, 2010
This review is from: 1977 (MP3 Download)
I will be completely honest, I have no idea what she's saying, but she has skills! The beats are nice, the flow is nice, the album is nice. If your a hip-hop fan, a real hip-hop fan that knows good music from the 90s, go ahead...pick this album up...and enjoy hip-hop music in the form of Spanish. F.Y.I. I'm not Spanish, I like good music and good artists. Real music fans in general...you need to add Ana Tijoux to your collection...and enjoy.

I was a little frustrated by the album for 2 reasons: 1) Her words don't rise above the instrumentation and it's hard to get the message if it's lost in the music. 2)Tijoux also sounds like she is not a native Spanish speaker, which again makes it hard to understand what she is saying. I do respect the fact that she began to rap because todays rap music has no substance and she has plenty and plenty to say....I wish some one at the record label had told her we can't hear her.
