A Meditation on John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love and Freedom
A few years ago, the Hungarian ambassador to the United States asked me to moderate a panel discussion at the embassy on “Rock & Roll as a Force for Freedom on Both Sides of the Iron Curtain.” The panel was to consist of the ambassador (András Simonyi), Tommy Ramone and me.

Editorial Reviews

John Mellencamp 1978-2012 is a boxed set collection covering, for the first time, all of the legendary singer/songwriter's principal studio albums. The collection consists of a total of 19 CDs originally released over a recording career that spans 35 years. The set contains a total of 223 tracks and includes such mythic album titles as American Fool, Lonesome Jubilee, Scarecrow, Cuttin' Heads and the more recent Life, Death, Love and Freedom and No Better Than This and the long out of print original soundtrack to the Mellencamp-directed film Falling From Grace. Thirteen of the albums in the collection were RIAA®-certified as Gold, Platinum or Multiplatinum winners while ten of the albums achieved Top Ten status on Billboard's Top 100 Album Chart. The set includes every one of Mellencamp's thirty Billboard Top 100 singles, from 'I Need A Lover' and 'Jack & Diane' to 'Pink Houses' and 'Rain On The Scarecrow,' as well as classics such as 'Paper in Fire,' 'Hurts So Good,' 'Crumblin' Down,' 'Jackie Brown,' 'Small Town,' 'Wild Night,' 'R.O.C.K In The U.S.A.,' 'Our Country' and, quite literally, all the rest. There are bonus tracks concluding twelve of the albums, sourced from the 2005 re-mastered versions of Mellencamp's Mercury releases.

I've been a fan since late Fall of 1979. "I Need A Lover" was it and I've owned all Mellencamp albums/CDs/Tapes days after their release (except Trouble No More).

I was not impressed with the 2005 releases, except for the availability of A Biography (1978). Most all of the bonus tracks were crap, but at least John got some attention paid to him that was finally due.

I do love the sound of this set. I appreciate the work that was put into these new remasters, but again, much like the 2005 re-issues, the bonus tracks lack in every aspect. Most of us truest die hard fans are looking for "Cold Sweat", "Pretty Ballerina", "Sham Lama Ding Dong", etc. The true treasures would be those b-sides as bonus cuts - especially "Shama Lama Ding Dong" and "Never Too Old" (both from Lonesome Jubilee).

Only the truest die hard (and neurotic) fans would bitch about the lack of John's MainMan material, but I'm forgiving about that here. No one really needs any of those two albums, unless you are looking for historical pieces to add to your Mellencamp collection. But believe me, we'd s*** some major bricks if those were included and jump all over this set in a New York minute. I'd go as high as $200 for those two CDs, A Biography, real B-Sides and Falling From Grace. Absolutely. No questions asked.

However, again, like the 2005 re-issues, there is a bonus release. This time in the form of that long awaited re-issue of Falling From Grace (Larry's "Whiskey burning" has never sounded so good and "Sweet Suzanne" is almost like those b-side treasures we are once again denied). I lost my Falling From Grace CD sometime in the 90's and haven't replaced it. It was nice to finally hear it unlike ever before.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disapointment January 22, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Albums, Of Course are superb. As A box set it is a huge disapointment. It not only misses the first 2 albums (not licenced or owned by Riva/Mercury. Also mising is the second Riva album issued in the U.K.. Also missing are all the 'One Off's' which appeared as 'B' sides, track included on 'Tribute' Albums and movie soundtrack contributions. Recording like (a) Baby, Please Don't Go (b) Do Re Mi (c) Gamblin' Bar Room Blues (d) Sham-a-lama Ding Dong, and the list goes on. There are rare tracks from the Rural Route box, The Perfect Storm OST.
The box is the worst quality cardboard and twis the size it needs to be to house the discs, and with absolutely no notation of any kind. A booklet summerising the recording, giving a little bio info. on the contributing, musicians as well as the main character.
An excellent example of why the lack of interest in owning CD's as opposed to downlading is the flavour de jour.
So much for so little cost could have made this an interesting set to own, but...

5.0 out of 5 stars ** WARNING ** Problem Found February 16, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Check your "John Mellencamp" CD, my plays "Cuttin' Heads". My "Life, Death. Love and Freedom" plays "Life, Death, LIVE and Freedom", the live album, which isn't even offered with this set. I sent UME an email notifying them of the problem. I'm waiting for their reply. In the meantime check your CDs, all of them, to assure you have what you should have. I'll update this posting once I hear back from UME. Peace Out.

UPDATE **** UME sent me the correct replacements saying that they were aware some box sets had my problem but they had thought they had caught all the bad ones before they hit the stores but somehow, at least, one got through. Mine. But now I have a remastered Love, Death, Live and Freedom in my set: 20 discs instead of 19 discs. I came out on top. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

Even though, packaging as we know it, is making its swan dive into the back pages of history. J. Mellencamps fans are from the packaging generation that cherishes the artwork and liner notes that graced our albums and to some extent CDs. While Going through the boxed set is an awesome feeling. It's like eating a great dinner with family and friends and no dessert being served. You can't help think, while it was enjoyed, how much better it may have been if it ended on a great note enjoying the company of those you care about the most.

5.0 out of 5 stars definitely one of america's best February 26, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
forget the rather slight packaging and concentrate on musical content. mellencamp's musical growth over the decades is more than impressive and in my humble opinion places him above many considered in the upper echelon of American artists. actually more consistent in his growth than springsteen or dylan in the last ten years with songs that truly stick with you and deceptively simple lyrics. there is a warmth and sincerity to his compositions that draws you into them and them into you. the remastering is good though not necessarily new, and the entire set is inviting and comfortable. highly recommended to fans old and new.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome February 9, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Simply one of the most thoughtful, down-to-earth singer/songwriters out there. From beginning to end, you will get songs that force one to think about their place in their world and what we can do to make it better. This has everything from pop songs to more stripped-down styles. Wonderful lyrics backed by an incredible band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contents great! Packaging a little careless September 6, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Contents great! Packaging a little careless. Two CDs had surface scratches from being improperly placed in cardboard sleeves. Seemed to play all right. All sleeves seemed tight. Contacted label distributer but received no response.

Mellencamp is a musical genius
I have just rediscovered JMC and my lord he is even better than the early days. I have just purchased a turntable and when i went looking for a record to play i managed to find a dog eared copy of The Lonesome Jubilee in my garage, gave it a wipe down, dropped the needle down and was blown away... Read More

Anyone getting this?
don't know. really like mellencamp, but for some reason this just doesn't seem that impressive. maybe because a lot of his albums lack a bit in consistent quality songs.
