Editorial Reviews

Affectionately dubbed the chicken soup game, the 1979 Cotton Bowl was played in freakishly low temperatures that covered Dallas in ice, and features collegiate Joe Montana suffering from the flue and hypothermia. Though he brings Notre Dame a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, Montana sits out for a while to nurse a bowl of chicken soup, and muster the strength to re-enter the game in the third quarter. The pressure is on, as the Houston Cougars have a remarkable lead at 34-12. The Cougars are so sure of victory they rest on their laurels and even send alternates to finish up the game. Big mistake. The next few incredible plays culminate in breathtaking triumph and lasts even to the very last second on the clock.

First off, I'd just like to say hats off to the NCAA for releasing classic football and basketball games on DVD. This one is the "Chicken Soup Game", so named because Notre Dame's quarterback Joe Montana was fed chicken soup at halftime. Joe was suffering from hypothermia and he was fed the soup in an attempt to raise his body temperature.

The Fighting Irish got off to a quick start, leading 12-0 early on. But the Houston Cougars came roaring back (no pun intended) to score 34 points. With over seven minutes left in the game and holding a commanding 34-12 lead, Houston coach Bill Yeoman called off the dogs and sent the second stringers out onto the field. Oops. The Irish battled back and tied the game with no time remaining when Montana, who'd been largely ineffective until the 4th quarter rally, connected with Kris Haines in the end zone to tie the game at 34. The extra point gave Notre Dame an unbelievable 35-34 victory.

Lindsey Nelson and Paul Hornung call the action on the CBS telecast. Thankfully, Hornung doesn't bring out the gold-and-green pom poms and is objective on commentary. The video quality is very good, with the exception of whenever CBS cut to taped shots of players. Overall, a recommended purchase for all college football fans.

This made for some good viewing.I grew up just a few miles north of where this game was played and my family and I had tickets for this game, but when a pre dawn ice storm hit Dallas,we ended up staying home because of the dangerous road conditions. We watched the game on CBS instead.

The video and sound quality is really good and I like the way it's divided up by quarter,so you can jump to any part of the game you want. There are no commercials and no halftime interruptions. This is like taking a trip back in time.Lindsay Nelson and Paul Hornung do a great job calling this fantastic game.

When the 1978 season began,Notre Dame was the defending national champion from the previous season.Unfortunately,a couple of early season losses combined with a loss to USC in the final seconds kept the Irish out of the championship hunt. They still managed to secure a spot in the Cotton Bowl to play Houston where Joe Montana would once again work his magic on this frigid Dallas day.In the 4th quarter, the Houston Cougars surged to a 34-12 lead.At this point,my dad changed the TV channel to another bowl game thinking that Houston had the game well in hand.Big mistake because Notre Dame overcame a 22 point deficit to win the game.

The Irish scored on a blocked punt and made a 2 point try to pull within 34-20.After another touchdown and 2 point try was converted, the score was then 34-28.Houston got the ball back and needed to get 1 yard on 4th down to secure the game.It didn't happen. The Cougars were stopped for no gain turning the ball over on downs. On the game's final play as the Cotton Bowl stadium clock showed zeros,Joe Montana, playing in his final college game rolled right. His primary receiver was well covered leaving Kris Haines his only option.
