2.0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated badly!, February 16, 1998

This review is from: The 1980's: Countdown to Armageddon (Paperback)
I first read this when it was published in 1981 and it was interesting. It was basically a follow up to "The Late Great Planet Earth" which set the standard formula for apocolyptic prophecy. I re-read it today (2-16-98) and it is way off. Lindsey marches on about how communism is sweeping the planet, how the USA how become a 2nd rate power, and so on. All wrong. All corrected by historical events of the past 17 years. But as this was an amended version of TLGPE, he will surely come up with revisions on why the previous prophecies were errant. He will become extremely wealthy frightening people with history tied to Biblical prophecy. If he lives forever he can publish one of these every 5 or 10 years, and eventually, when it does happen, he can say "There! I told ya so!" The good parts: Lindsey lists what he considers to be prophetic/apocalyptic passages of the Bible. He does so without too much sermonizing, until the last few pages. The bad parts: All his completely WRONG forecasts of why we are in (as of 1981) the "end times". Actually, I had some good laughs re-reading it and finding it so far off-base. There are several humorous errors, including listing of 7 empires predicted by Daniel, from his time through the end time. Lindsey omits major ones such as the Ottoman Empire, Nazi Germany, etc etc. But the magic number must be 7! Also, the European Economic Community was 10 (he says) when the book was published, which is prophesized, but is now up to 16 or 17. Comments, anyone? Not worth buying (sorry Amazon) but perhaps worth buying at a flea market for a dime as a reference book on how difficult it is to interpret Biblical prophecy.

1.0 out of 5 stars 30 years later ..., October 23, 2011
Thirty years later, so much of what Hal Lindsey predicted hasn't come close to coming true.

What's equally sad is that he has divorced his first three wives, and is on "number four." This from a man who studies and teaches the Bible?

3.0 out of 5 stars 80's or not, there's a lot of truth & facts in this book!, March 13, 2005
By
A book on Biblical prophesies and how they will come true in the 1980"s. The author prophesies that the Armageddon is just around the corner; Hal may have been off a few years, but still interesting reading. "We are the generation the prophets were talking about! We have witnessed Biblical prophecies come true: the rebirth of Israel; the decline of American power and morality; the rise of Russian and Chinese might; the threat of war in the Middle East; the increase of earthquakes, volcanoes, famine and drought. The Bible foretells the signs that precede Armageddon.". We are the generation the prophets were talking about. We have witnessed Biblical prophecies come true.
