All Things 80

Amos Lassen

During the entire decade of the 1980's I was not living in America and I am sure that things were very different from those who were living here and in Canada. I was in Israel and we were plagued by wars so quite naturally our lives were very different to those in the Western Hemisphere. I have often wondered what I missed but due to the new Quebecois filmmaker Ricardo Trogi I won't have to wonder anymore,
"1981" is about the 80's and it is a wonderful little comedy that is semi-autobiographical. The main character is eleven years old and modeled on the director himself. He struggles with his family having moved to a new place and he has to go to a new school. He decides to become a liar so that he can impress his new classmates, all of whom come from wealthy backgrounds. Ricardo invents a new family history and he must be on his toes to remember what he has said and to whom to avoid being caught. Carl Boucher plays Ricardo and he is charming and endearing. 1981 was the year that Ricardo and his family moved to a big house in Ste-Foy and Ricardo and his sister, Nadia brought along their own obsessions. Nadia is obsessed with Caramel, her cat and Ricardo loves some of the things that he saw in a catalog and he also has love for several girls. The parents seem to be obsessed with how they will pay the mortgage on the new house.
Ricardo's coming-of-age story is about a materialistic little liar who learns that he has erred and it is very sweet. The story is touching as it captures first love and male pre-adolescence. It is the story of slacker (Ricardo) who loves achiever (his girlfriend, Anne, the smartest girl in his class. The jokes in the script are subtle but show the naiveté of youth. I love way this was filmed because it so captured what it is like to be 11 and we see that what was true in the 80's remains true today. Ricardo discovers his identity--who he is and he tries to make each day better than the one before.
