Book Description

May 1, 2007
The extraordinary events of the 1982 Formula One season are still hard to believe 25 years on. Most memorable of all was the thrilling fight for the title -- the 16 races were won by 11 different drivers -- and the controversy surrounding the deaths of three men, two of them Grand Prix icons.

There were also ominous subcurrents, not least the FOCA-FISA war, the struggle between the turbo and normally aspirated teams, and the driver rebellion over super licenses.

Packed with fresh insight from interviews and new research, this superbly illustrated all-color book captures all the drama of a remarkable year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about an unforgettable year, April 17, 2010
This review is from: 1982: The Inside Story of the Sensational Grand Prix Season (Hardcover)
1982 was a year of highs and lows in Formula 1 racing. It was a year of tragedy with the loss of Gilles Villeneuve and the end of the career of Didier Pironi who probably would have been champion but for his accident. But the book also brings out the often forgotten tragedy of Riccardo Paletti, a young driver who wasn't famous or a race winner.
The racing was fascinating during the year and so was the politics. From the drivers' strike in South Africa to the final race in Las Vegas. Each race is recalled in great detail by the author and includes a "Driver's view" section by one of the drivers who took part in that race. Included are photos and track maps of each race.
If you are into Formula One racing at all, or know someone who is, this book is a great source of the history of what F1 used to be like before it became the sterile sport we see today. Christopher Hilton does an unbelievable job of capturing all the emotion of the season in a way that lets you feel that you were there. I don't believe I've ever read a finer book on F1 racing and the lives within it.
