I can't explain how excited I was to hear that Whitesnake was finally releasing their long awaited follow-up to `Slide It In' in the early spring of 1987. The first single "Still of the Night" was an absolute monster and it was much heavier then I remember Whitesnake ever being. When the self-titled LP finally came, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. This was not the Whitesnake sound that I had originally fallen in love with but was in reality a much different band that was primed to take the hair metal world by storm! David Coverdale, after years of European success but American indifference remade the blues rock foundation of the first band and created a heavy metal juggernaut. John Sykes played a seriously blistering metal guitar and much of the blues trappings of the earlier years were much more subtle. So why was `Whitesnake' (or `1987') such a disappointment for me? Because the band that ruled the radio and MTV airwaves was not the REAL Whitesnake of 1978-1984. Also some of the "hits" still make me cringe today (almost threw up in my mouth the first time I heard "Is This Love"). "Crying in the Rain" and "Here I Go Again" were recorded songs originally found on the `Saints n' Sinners' LP and here they definitely improved during the makeover. I may be in the minority but I have never given this record as much love as its mega sales status would expect. A sell out is a sellout but at least it was better than the follow- up, but that's another story. "Still of the Night" is a classic and "Here I Go Again" may be the ultimate power ballad but give me the old Whitesnake any day!

this 1987 Whitesnake album is not the best line up,...though could be the best album ever made...I do not like this new 1987 line up. I still prefer the old Whitesnake line up along with John Lord, Coverdale, Ian Paice (ex three members of deep purple line up)
