An Exciting Summary of an Exciting Season, October 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 1988 Year in Baseball [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I wish they still made these baseball "video yearbooks." They provided annual, unbiased coverage from all over the game; no teams were ignored (unlike when it comes to the Cubs and Hall of Fame voting...but that's another story!). Some of my favorite '88 highlights are:
The 3 record "streaks" (bad ones for the Orioles and Braves; a good one for Orel Hershiser);
"A night in the AL East", when 3 teams brought their playoff race down to the wire and it all unfolded within hours;
And a "sacred" look at historic Wrigley Field which still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
This one also includes plenty of the season's lighter moments and top defensive plays, along with an analysis of 1988's most successful clubs, complete with subtle jokes like "The Tigers were a ballclub most people expected would 'bring up the rear'".
The one problem I have with this video is that the World Series coverage uses only overture and Mel Allen's narration; the calls of the original announcers aren't included (not even on the famous Kirk Gibson homer).
Overall, this is a nice, timeless work and a good deal for any baseball fan.
