5.0 out of 5 stars The best, June 28, 2000

This review is from: 1991-1998: Backpacking on the Graves of Our Ancestors (Audio CD)
Every CD transglobal underground releases is in my opinion, pure perfection. The idea of mixing traditional music with techno is the most incredible thing I've ever come upon. This CD is everything the others are and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drinking on the graves of our ancestors, October 13, 2007
This review is from: 1991-1998: Backpacking on the Graves of Our Ancestors (Audio CD)
I first came across Transglobal through Natacha Atlas. After a long trip through the Middle East the local music had gripped me. Diaspora was just released and Natacha performed at the Tilburg Festival Mundial. It was a revelation and for years I have regularly visited her concerts, hoping for some belly dancing as well ;-). Some time after Tilburg my neighbour in my student home was playing her cd and he also had the cd Dream of 100 Nation, on which Natacha sings some of her best songs.

I am writing this review in a most fitting place, for Tbilisi is renowned for its hospitality, diversity and tolerance. You can find churches, synagogues and mosques here with a mix of Turkish, Russian and Persian influences. Transglobal Underground could provide the ultimate soundtrack for a Georgian supra on a hot summer evening.

The title of my review reveres to the Georgian habit of eating and drinking on the graves of their ancestors at Easter. You can find tables and seats at every cemetery here. TGU itself is not dead yet, check out http://www.t-g-u.com/

Goran Bregovic Music for Films, Bucovina Club Bucovina Club, Savina Yannatou Mediterranea: Songs of the Mediterranean and Kardes Turkuler Dogu (to name a few of my favorites) are more traditional in their music, but they share with TGU the refusal of accepting of political borders or limits on human creativity, showing that music is capable of uniting people across nations and continents.
