This review is from: 1991 -1998 (18 Tracks Hits Cd w/ Rare Acoustic Track) (Audio CD)
I was one of the lucky people who were able to obtain this promotional compilation CD when it was first released. It came out just before the release of the Smashing Pumpkins "MACHINA: The Machines of God" CD around 1999-2000. The price was very reasonable back then at an indie record shop. "1991-1998" Virgin DPRO-14923 is a nice one-disk collection of a diverse set of Smashing Pumpkins songs. The art goes along with MACHINA as well. "1991-1998" partly filled the niche that would later be filled by the Smashing Pumpkins "Greatest Hits" in its 2-disk "Rotten Apples" & "Judas O" version. The center piece of "1991-1998" is probably the rare acoustic version of "Mayonaise". This otherwise unreleased cool recording is not to be found even among the 34 tracks on "Greatest Hits." This track is also available on the even rarer 5-track Promo CD-EP "Still Becoming... ...Apart" Virgin 7243 8 49021 2 4JK. Of course the original electric version of "Mayonaise" may be found on the album "Siamese Dream".

Just to get it out of my system; I would like to encourage anyone who is a Smashing Pumpkins fan that ever has the oppertunity to obtain the Vinyl LP version of "MACHINA: The Machines of God" to do so. The cover art and booklet art are fantastic scaled up to the 12" format. Also the printing on the import version of the LP is even nicer than the US LP. The same is true of for the Vinyl LP releases of "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" -- pricy, but you even have a chance of actually reading the lyric sheets. :-) Also some copies of SD come on colored vinyl!
