5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection for new and old fans, June 3, 2008
By
This review is from: 1994-2006 Chaos Years (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
The first suspicions of any long time SYL fan are that this is Century Media's way to go around the band and make a last buck off of them, but after getting this package, I will say that is not entirely the case. This best of collection spans the entire career of SYL with a nice selection of cuts from all over.
Sure, you probably have all of SYL's records, but this comes with some real good bonuses, like a huge booklet with band comments on each song (as they've done with the re-issues) that are very insightful and humorous at times. The DVD portion features an entire concert from Download 06, as well as numerous live performances throughout the years. It also features promotional videos including the brand new video for "Almost Again" which is pretty cool.

If you've never experienced SYL, this is a GREAT place to start. This cd is pretty much like their live set lists. This is a great band, and it stinks that this is the final chapter in their career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty for new and old fans alike, December 5, 2008
This review is from: 1994-2006 Chaos Years (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Now that mad scientist of metal Devin Townsend has put Strapping Young Lad on ice, the time is ripe for a comprehensive best-of collection like Chaos Years: 1994-2006. The disc includes a pair of songs from the band's 1995 debut Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, 4 songs from 1997's City, 3 from 2003's SYL, 4 from 2005's Alien, 3 from 2006's The New Black, and the bonus track "Satan's Ice Cream Truck" from the 2006 reissue of Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing. That's 17 tracks of absolutely insane, unclassifiable heavy metal that will make your ears bleed. Actually, I don't think it's too farfetched to compare Chaos Years: 1994-2006 to an overdose of a particularly potent drug. You may think you can handle it, but pretty soon you realize just what you've taken on.

While the main audio disc is an ideal starting point for newcomers to the SYL sound, it doesn't really offer anything to long time fans that already have the band's back catalogue. Fortunately Chaos Years: 1994-2006 comes with a bonus DVD with enough concert footage, video clips and behind the scenes material to keep the die-hards happy. Honestly, there's enough footage on the DVD that it could have been released in its own right.

Whether you're new to the band or have been following them for years, Chaos Years: 1995-2006 has plenty to offer. Just don't expect to come out the other side with your sanity intact!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to the Apocalypse, May 27, 2008
This review is from: 1994-2006 Chaos Years (Audio CD)
No one, NO ONE, did it better, faster, harder, heavier, or as brilliantly insane (or is that insanely brilliant?) than Strapping Young Lad.

This is an excellent collection of songs, with thoughtful reflections from everyone in the band on the track selections, the albums, and SYL's career as a whole.

The highlight of this collection has to be the Live at Download 2006 footage. Absolutely jaw-dropping.

This collection is a must-have for any SYL fan, and the perfect piece to introduce the Lad to the unsuspecting masses.

5.0 out of 5 stars SYL Greatness, March 31, 2010

This review is from: 1994-2006 Chaos Years (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This collection is SYL's best songs, the songs on here that are from the Heavy As A Really HEAY Thing, album are re-masterd so the quality is Much better.
The DVD has all of there Music videos, and a entire live show recorded at the Download festival and a few other live performances thrown is as well. This is great for the metal head who is just getting into SYL, or the fan of Devin Townsend who wants to see what he use to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great package, with a couple of weak spots, April 10, 2008

Following the break up of SYL in late 2006 this `best of' sums up the greatest moments of this band. The track list covers indeed the whole period from the 1995 debut to their swansong "The New Black" in 2006.
This package is amongst the most classy one could come across. The booklet includes comments for every song by each and every member of the band. Additionally mastermind "Devin Townsend" reflects on all five albums individually.
Still if you already own all five SYL studio albums the only reason to consider buying this is the bonus live DVD. This include the Download UK show the band played during the farewell tour as well as additional live clips and video clips that span the band's entire career. A very lucrative package indeed, still it has to be clear that these live achieves are NOT the best live performances of SYL. Devin's clean vocals are nowhere as powerful, while regular switching between clean and brutal almost leaves him behind in the song, in addition backing lead vocals are not as well synchronized which subsequently make choruses sound thin rather than explosive. The band also relies a lot more on keyboard and maybe sample sounds than it did in the past.
Overall this is a very honest release and great value for money (this refers to the original price of $17.00). Still if you buy this solely for the visual part you might feel slightly let down.

These guys certainly put the extreme in extreme metal. This collection offers many of the best songs from SYLs 5-album history. A good starting point to new fans of the band. The bonus DVD with extensive live footage and all of their official videos is a nice addition.

Not necessary for fans who already own all of SYLs stuff, but recommended for fans of extreme metal who do not want to purchase all of SYLs albums.
