In years to come 1998 will be remembered as one of the finest in the history of baseball. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa slugged their way into the record books, and David Wells pitched a perfect game. Roger "The Rocket" Clemens reached the giddy heights of the 3,000 plateau. Cal took a day off. And then there were the Yankees. Fittingly, it was the Bronx Bombers who penciled in the final emphatic exclamation point of the season, by sweeping the San Diego Padres in four games. A season that saw them brush aside all opposition while on their way to 125 wins would have been incomplete without this victory. The official Major League Baseball video recaps the regular season of the Padres and Yanks, before following them through the playoffs, and then on to the World Series. The inspired San Diego team, led admirably by the ageless yet priceless Tony Gwynn, Kevin Brown, and Wally Joyner, encountered a Yankee team too experienced and too deep, from wily veterans like David Cone and Paul O'Neil to brilliant youngsters like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The 1998 Yankees were a team on a mission from start to finish, a feeling epitomized in the messiah-like stature of Joe Torre, who himself said that getting to the final hurdle simply wasn't good enough were they to come away empty-handed. In a fitting testament to professionalism and team unity, the Yankees established themselves in 1998 as perhaps the greatest team in any sport, ever. Exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage (never seen before on TV), and "wired for sound" players from every game make this video a must for any baseball fan. --Jeremy Storey

From the back cover

It was the season of their lives. In 1998 Major League Baseball had its greatest year, and more fans in more cities than ever before took in the thrill of big league baseball. But in the end, only one town could claim its place at the top, and only one team could call 1998 its championship season. The 1998 Official Major League Baseball World Series Video takes the fan through the drama of the Playoffs to the most in-depth, complete coverage of the Fall Classic. The inspired National League Champion San Diego Padres, led by veteran outfielder Tony Gwynn and big-game ace Kevin Brown, try to steal history from the powerhouse American League Champion New York Yankees, whose 125 wins in 1998 were a testament to true greatness. Manager Joe Torre and team leaders Derek Jeter and David Cone fight one final battle in their quest to establish themselves as perhaps the finest group to ever put on the pinstripes. It's a total-action, all-access ticket to the Series, with: Exclusive film and behind the scenes footage never seen on TV. Exclusive interviews and key figures "wired for sound" during every World Series game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Yankee team since Mantle and Maris, April 7, 2008
The Yankees are my team. I adopted them as a child in the 1950s when I grew up in New York and inspite of their success and unpopularity they remain my team. I have seen the dynasty of the 1950s and early 60s. Their fall in 1965 and resurrection in 1976. After 1981 they suffered a drought until 1996 and Joe Torre constructed his best team in 1998. While Sosa and McGwire were annihilating Maris' home run record the Yankees quietly amassed one of the best winning records in the history of the game and the San Diego Padres made it to the World Series. The Yankees had it all pitching, hitting, defense and power. The Padres were no match for this ream and got swept. It is arguable whether this was the greatest Yankee team I ever witnessed. The 1961 Yankees behind the home run power of Mantle and Maris and the piych of Ford an Arroyo were certainly up there even if the won-loss record was not quite a match. I would say one of these two Yankee teams was the best ever. I know some will say the 1927 Yanks were.

This 1998 series is not a very exciting series as the Yankees ran away with it. But it is a treat to look at it just to remember how great they were.

By A Customer
This review is from: 1998 Official World Series Video - New York Yankees vs. San Diego Padres [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Only 2 months later, I forgot some of the great moments as the Yankees completed an almost perfect season. This video brought it all back and reminded me what a great feat the Yankees accomplished as a team.
