More and Less,
By A Customer
This review is from: 1998 Writer's Market: Where & How to Sell What You Write (Annual) (Paperback)
Every year the current WRITER'S MARKET touts its new additions, so we're led to believe that we'll have more publishers and editors to whom to submit our work. Wrong! Each year there may be more entries, but there are also more houses and magazines which do not want unsolicited material and/or to hear from The Unpublished. In order for this annual reference book to be truly invaluable every category should have two sections: one for published authors and one for unpublished writers. The latter section could be called "Publishers and Editors Who Are Dying to See Your Work and Will Publish Everything Sent to Them." And I don't mean vanity presses, which are like honorary degrees or being published just because you're famous in some way. Another not-so-minor problem with every WRITER'S MARKET is that the editorial information may be incorrect by the time it's bought or used. This could mean added delays in receiving a response, if your query or submission isn't misplaced forever. Use it with caution at the library and expect to be frustrated.

This book should be on every serious writer's shelf. The CD and software are simple to use, though lack some obvious features.

The book is near-perfect. Almost every question I have ever had, about freelance magazine articles, is answered in detail.

As a writing instructor, writer and freelance editor, I use my copy almost daily. It is the best compilation of magazine markets available. However, there are other magazines out there that are not listed. Check with the major bookstores, in the offices of doctors, lawyers, plumbers, etc. for those thaqt are not listed. Worth the money.

I am completing my twenty-third year as a professor of English and Humanities at a two-year community college. Over the years, I have taught a wide variety of Humanities/Literature/Philosophy classes. About ten years ago, I began to encourage each student to send in his/her favourite piece of writing to an appropriate magazine. Some have sent in poems and short stories; others, informative essays or reviews of works. The main goal is to send the material out to a magazine or an anthology, mainly for the experience of writing a cover letter, and for a chance for the student to revise his or her work for an specific audience. This is where I find the book, 1998 WRITER'S MARKET: WHERE & HOW TO SELL WHAT YOU WRITE (Annual) by Kristen Holm (Editor), as I did many of the past editions of THE WRITER'S MARKET, to be a most valuable refernce tool. Extremely useful information is presented in a most practical and positive manner. The most valuable pieces of information given are: Thank you for the opportunity to express my opinion.

Must have for Writers,

The Writers' Guide has been a valuable resource to me as a writer for years now. Although there are not too many changes from the 1997 edition, the 1998 edition does have complete and updated listings for all aspecting of writing from greeting cards and poetry, to drama and screenplays. I have not sounds a more complete listing of theatres looking for submissions. The '98 guide also has literary magazine listings and guides to agents and cover letters. This book can help you with every aspect of publishing, all you have to do is write the book, poem, etc. This is a good place to start for any beginning writer and a valuable resource even for the most experienced one.
