Still working just fine, June 26, 2007
This review is from: 2GB kit (1GBx2) Upgrade for a Apple Mac mini (Intel Core Duo - 1.66GHz) System (DDR2 PC2-5300, NON-ECC, ) (Personal Computers)
I just updated my memory on my new mac mini 1.66 from 516 MB to 2 GB. Of course the Crucial memory is a lot cheaper than buying it installed. (Half when I bought.) I found the instructions for breaking the machine apart and replacing the memory here: [...]. I'm not a computer repair type person, and I had to do the installation twice. Be warned that it's not as simple as slipping the cover off, taking out the old memory boards, and installing the new. No, after taking the cover off, you have to remove an antenna, unplug a cable, unscrew 4 screws and lift off the CD drive, then the memory location is exposed. Also, be careful to seat the new boards fully. That was my problem. After my first attempt my computer registered only 1 GB, when I'd installed 2 GB. I started over, reseated the two boards and put the machine back together and booted and I had 2 GB! The instructions say use a putty knife to pry the cover off but I used a thin-bladed dinner knife. Worked fine. Don't do one side then the other; instead slip the knife in one side and move it around an inch or two at a time to the other side. You also need a jeweler's phillips head, and needle nose pliers and flashlight helped. All stuff I had at home. I used a touch of dry bar soap to attach the screws to the phillips head while lowering them back in to their grooves. I give the product 4 stars for now. After using it a while, I'll know if it's a 5. Good luck!
8 Feb 07 - It's a 5! (But you can't change the original rating, it appears.)

Defective product, terrible customer service., August 28, 2008

I was very impressed at how fast my initial order shipped. I found installing to be not nearly as scary as all the websites said it would be. I turned on my Mac, and all seemed well. Within an hour it was clear that something was wrong as my comp would restart randomly when I used memory intensive applications like photo editing software. A little research led me to "defective RAM". I played around, made sure it was properly installed, it was. I put my old RAM back and my problem was solved confirming it was defective RAM. Ok. These things happen.
I went to Crucial's website to get the required RMA number. Took three days to get. Mailed it back. Three days later got an Email saying they had received my RMA and were processing my exchange. Fair enough. It has now been ten days, and they still have not shipped me any replacement RAM. I emailed Crucial and they haven't even bothered to respond.
I recommend going for that upgrade, its not that hard to install. Just get a brand other than Crucial unless you don't mind risking a long wait to get what you paid for. So far its been over three weeks, with no word, and no response to my email.
