Product Description

This ExpressCard Power eSATA port controller card can be installed in an available ExpressCard 34/54 mm slot to provide a powered eSATA connection, and also alternatively provide either external SATA (data only) or USB 2.0 connectivity from one uniquely designed port if using with standard eSATA or USB devices. An ideal solution for using an eSATA SSD Flash drive on your laptop, the power eSATA card delivers both a high speed eSATA connection and power from the combined USB port. A versatile connectivity solution, the card features built-in port multiplier support, allowing multi-drive eSATA storage enclosures to be connected to the host computer using a single eSATA cable. Taking advantage of the transfer speed of eSATA connection and the 5V power output of the USB 2.0 port, the ExpressCard Power eSATA adapter is the perfect answer for connecting compatible mobile drive enclosures, similar to the built-in power eSATA port provided by the following laptop computers: Toshiba: Satellite E105, A350, Satellite Pro P300; Qosmio G50, X305, Portege A600, M750, R500, R600; and Tecra M10, R10, A10. Dell: Studio 15, 17; Latitude E6400, E6500; Precision M2400, M4400, M6400, M6400 Covet.

Works fine with G-Tech 4TB drive on a MacBook Pro. Have to go to the web site to download drivers since the mini-disk won't work with a Mac without a DVD tray. But, once I found the driver, downloaded it and installed it, all worked perfectly. And fast!

I really wish this card worked in a plug-and-play way. The driver installer never works- you have to go through Add New Hardware.

Sometimes identical hardware/identical software (identically imaged HP computers) will simply refuse to see the card, through reboots, etc etc.

But when it works, it works.

I will not purchase this product because it DOES NOT support Snow Leopard. I have two Dell Inspiron laptops with Express ports and the GoFlex drive from Seagate. I also own Macs. I'd like to back them all up with the same device with relative speed.

Still looking.

This card does not work on my 17" MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard). After installing the most recent StarTech driver, which the System Profiler recognized as being installed, I inserted the ExpressCard. With nothing yet attached to the card, the first kernel panic occurred within the first five minutes. A second kernel panic occurred several days later, again with nothing yet attached. After receiving my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro (7200rpm, 750GB), I used the card to initialize and partition the drive with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, one partition to be used with Time Machine. On two occasions, after fresh initializations of the drive each time, the Time Machine partition became corrupted. Since I have now used the Seagate drive successfully, for over a month, with Time Machine using the drives supplied USB 2.0 cable and since the first two kernel panics occurred even before a device was attached, I attribute the data corruption to the StarTech card as well.

With deference to Startech's advertising, the 1 Port ExpressCard Power eSATA Controller Adapter Card does not support Snow Leopard. I thought that maybe Alan's previous NewEgg review indicated that StarTech had upgraded the card but not yet the advertising. I have communicated with StarTech on two occasions now and their Product Management team does not have an ETA as to when the card will support Snow Leopard. My hope is that this review, as others I intend to post, will be the "squeaky wheel that gets oiled". I will post another review with outcomes when that happens.
