This little device works like a charm in that respect.

You can also pipe the console port through to an ssh session, so you get a remote serial console!

Highly recommend if you need a portable solution especially in a Data Center environment.

First, what does this device do?
Answer: It allows you to remotely view the display and remotely access the keyboard and mouse of a computer similar to TightVNC, RealVNC or other VNC implementations.

Second, why would I buy this if TightVNC and RealVNC are free?
Answer: Typical VNCs require you to have network access to the computer you are trying to remote control. If you do not have direct network access, i.e. the computer has no network card, is connected to a VPN, can not run vncserver etc., this device may work for you since it connects to the VGA and USB ports of the computer you want to remote control. Since this device connects to the remote computer's VGA and USB ports, you can change BIOS settings, BIOS passwords etc. before the operating system has booted.

The Spider I use contains firmware 03.00.01. I am using it to remote control a Windows XP machine.

Disclaimer: Just because it works for me does not mean it will work for you. I only use this device for VNC type functions (KVM over IP). It has many other features which I have not tested.

Pros:
1) Java based client which works with the Sun Java 6 browser plugin for Ubuntu 9.10 and the Iced Tea open source free Java browser plugin which comes with Ubuntu 11.04.

2) Powered by two USB ports. No power supply needed.

3) The client in similar to the Java applet that comes with RealVNC. If you know how to use RealVNC, you will probably have no trouble using this device.

4) Small and attaches directly to a computer.

5) Inexpensive compare to other KVM over IP devices.

6) Can be controlled and used strictly with a Web Browser with a Java plugin. No proprietary software is required.

7) Java client uses TCP.

I've been doing Sysadmin work for about 15 years and if there's anything I like it's the ability to work remotely. This little device works like a charm in that respect. Out of the box it took about 10 minutes to setup using a serial port session (DB9 to RJ45 cable included). Connected it on an HP server I've been working on and after logging into the web interface (first http, then spawns a Java based console window) was looking at the screen and playing with the BIOS, then using kickstart to load the OS. Only been using it for a few hours but so far it seems like a solid product that does what it advertises and does it well. I'll update this review if I find any deficiencies, but so far - so good. Very happy with it!

This one-port, self-powered IP-KVM is perfect for colo use. If you have remote hands, you're just a call away from being able to debug server problems with full BIOS access. The price is amazing to get the features provided by this IP-KVM and have the flexibility provided by it.

I haven't been this pleasantly surprised with a product in a while. It works easily and out of the box as advertised. A few tips:

1) You don't need to mess with the serial cable to configure the device. Just use a network discovery tool (e.g. iNet Network Toolbox or nmap or maybe your router/gateway's DHCP listing) and find the device's IP the first time you plug it in... Then you can configure it from its web page.

2) Turn off enhanced mouse precision on windows on the remote machine. There is a fair amount of lag so this isn't a perfect solution but it's acceptable I think.

I do remote installations at various data centers across the United States. In each case when I install equipment, it is necessary to set up the BIOS and default IP address for remote KVM support via built-in software. This device replaces the much bigger KVM switches and is a breeze to travel with. Quite literally, I cannot do my job without this device and it works flawlessly. Highly recommend if you need a portable solution especially in a Data Center environment.

If you need KVM over Internet for the least amount of money and are willing to ignore few minor shortcomings this is probably your best bet. First you should understand that this is a product for above average technology knowledgeable people. It works fine but it requires some setup. Instructions are pretty good but you need some prior basic knowledge too. You need to understand basic TCP/IP configuration and routing, port forwarding, you need to be comfortable changing your browser security settings and the Java settings. Some options like the power management require tweaking of your computer's hardware settings - like enabling the network adapter to wake up a system in "sleep" mode.
The management website hosted on the device itself offers some pretty detailed control features - separate security system with customizable levels of control. I have a login setup to show me the remote desktop as soon as I type in the password. That is pretty neat.
After some tinkering and googling got it to a very satisfactory state. For the last month I have been using it almost daily for 8+ hours and it has been working almost without a hitch. My biggest complaint is that the Java applet which is the actual remote control window is a bit flaky. Sometimes just gets hosed without apparent reason. All it takes is to relaunch it from the web interface but I'd like it better if I did not have to do that. The advantage is that you can walk up to any computer with internet connection and pull up your remote desktop but it seems like they could have done a better job with that software. The Java applet does not work on Android. Setting the right resolution and other remote control window options took several tries. You might have to change your remote computer's screen settings for optimal result.
