Destiny's Child - 1997-2005.,
By The Groove (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: #1's (Audio CD)
If anyone told me in 1998 that Destiny's Child would last long enough to release a greatest hits album, I'd roll my eyes and call `em crazy. After all, their debut album was hardly a big seller, despite a Top Five hit "No, No, No, part 2." They didn't seem much more than a bubblegum En Vogue that got lucky, and it appeared that they were on a clear path to the dreaded One Hit Wonderland. But seven years, two personnel changes, four solo albums, and a string of platinum discs later, we find Destiny's Child a household name, an institution so recognizable that even your Grandmother has probably hummed to a few of their hits. DC (which plans to retire by year's end) has always been dubbed as a modern day Supremes, and, like that trio, they're much more effective as a singles act. "#1s" compiles the trio's hits (its title to the contrary, not even half of these hits reached Number One on any Billboard chart). They range from classic ("Say My Name" and "Bootylicious"), to underrated ("Girl"), to tough-skinned ("Independent Women," "Survivor," and "Lose My Breath"), to guilty pleasure fare ("Soldier" and "No, No, No, part 2"). Glamour girl Beyonce belts out these tunes at every opportunity, while Kelly and Michelle respectably hold their own. As for the three "new" songs, two of them are pretty negligible as far as I'm concerned. "Stand Up For Love" is a drippy, saccharine ballad and the hip-hop-ish "Check on It" is a blatant tie-in to Beyonce's movie, "The Pink Panther." Only "Feel the Same Way I Do" has any life and soul. But that's a small complaint compared to the rest of the tunes on this otherwise fine compilation.
(Final note: As you already know, a DualDisc version of this release is available, but consumers should be warned. The audio side of these DualDiscs isn't compatible with most PCs, so if you're looking to rip music off it, you may be better off getting the standard version instead.)

As a casual Destiny's Child fan, this is perfect for me. I admit they might be a tad overrated, but the majority of these songs are still very good. Obviously it's wonderful to have "Bills Bills Bills", "Bug A Boo", "Lose My Breath", and "Stand Up For Love" on the same disc. And who doesn't like "Bootylicious"? I personally can't think of a single track that's missing. This being the end of DC, good luck to the girls in the future, though I doubt Beyonce needs any luck at this point. Overall #1's is a super collection, and will go well with my Mariah Carey and TLC greatest hits.

A trip down memory lane!,

Well, no one would have guessed that Destiny's Child would have a greatest hits album with 14 standard hits (even though not all of them are #1 singles) but if you look back over their career, one can see why they are still here today! I love this album, because it simply takes me back to the early days of Destiny's Child when there was Beyonce', Kelly, LaTavia, and LeToya ("No, No, No") but also showcases recent hits such as "Lose My Breath" and "Soldier". I am really sad to see, Destiny's Child as a whole split up, but I think with them releasing solo efforts in the near future, it is no question that we will keep recieving the greatness of Destiny's Child separately!

I can't stand HER and because of that haterism I forgot how great the Destiny's Child actually was when they were together. Great cd, it'll take you back to when music was still good and before it started going downhill! Great buy.

I dont know who would not LOVE this cd.It's little bit of hip hop, soul,r&b and pop. These girls are oviously talented, and have been trying to achieve their musical dream since they were 9 years old. What else is there for them to do?Beyonce is now an international superstar thanks to Destiny's Child,Kelly and Michelle also got out solo's.We've all seen these girls grow up, they aren't girls anymore they are women, like Beyonce who just got married to Jay-z.Beyonce is like the R&B version of Madonna.I rate this more then 5 stars, more like 100.

Pop music doesn't come more glamourous than this. At their very best, Destiny's Child has produced some of the most memorable pop music of the last 10 years. "Survivor," "Independent Women," "Lose My Breath," "Jumpin'Jumpin'"--the group is at its best when it uses rapid fire speak-singing (not quite rap, but clearly influenced by it) in combination with tight harmony singing. The break on "Bootylicious" where the ladies harmonize is a favorite moment from my favorite of their songs.
This CD is all the casual fan of Destiny's Child will need, but gets four stars from me instead of 5 for that awful first cut, a schlockfest that never catches fire. After that it is pretty smooth sailing--but there are potholes--"Emotion" does not match the shimmery Bee Gees production of the original, and the last two tracks--"Cater 2 U" and another new cut should really not have made the cut. Another major annoyance to me is the ease with which two original members were cut from the lineup never again to be refered to. There are three faces on the cover, but a couple more were a part (albeit minor) of their early success, and should at least have been given a couple of interior photos. Aside from the above criticisms, though, the album is really quite rewarding. Of course, comparisons to the Supremes are inevitable, and Beyonce Knowles would be wise to remember the ups and downs of Diana Ross' solo career. It is Beyonce's voice, above all, that helped Destiny's Child rise above the masses of pop groups and become inescapable. While Kelly (especially) and Michelle may have a few more successful years in them, Beyonce will reign supreme over pop music for a long time, if she continues to make good choices.

Excellent addition to a DC collection,

I just got this CD for Christmas and I am NOT disappointed at all!! I love this CD and I absoutely love Stand Up For Love. It's an excellent song and this CD is an excellent addition to a Destiny's Child collection. This, This is the Remix, and 8 Days of Christmas are must-haves if you want to have a good collection. Obviously, you'll need Destiny's Child, The Writings on the Wall, Survivor, and Destiny Fulfilled as well, but that's another story. #1's is an accurate title and a great CD.
