Biography

Combining electronic beats, jazz basslines, and a soulful voice, 1undread's sound has one foot firmly rooted in jazz, while the other steps in the direction of cutting edge experimentation, dubstep, glitch-hop, and jungle.

1undread is the project of Brian Swan, an accomplished classical and jazz bass player who teaches music and plays with the Bermuda Philharmonic, and Nici P, a former session singer and DJ who held a residency at Liquid, the influential Leeds nightclub along future greats like Andy Smith of Portishead, Mr. Scruff, and James Wardell.

After releasing three well-received albums and developing their live act, the pair signed with Permanent Damage Records to release "Sometimes It's Not Easy" a four-track EP that showcases their musical versatility, with Brian's live bass performances and Nic's smoky voice taking centre stage, supported as always by constantly evolving rhythms.

The title track, "Sometimes It's Not Easy" sets the tone of the EP with Brian and Nic blending live performance and synthesized sounds together seamlessly, culminating in bass fills that would be impossible to program with a computer.

Following with "This Sound," the pair put their spin on dubstep and glitch-hop, showcasing mind-boggling drum and vocal edits. The vibe is trippy and expands the dubstep genre beyond its current boundaries.

"Got To Go" lifts in both pace and lyrics, with Nici P's voice taking on the starring role. As she pines for a dying planet that we need to leave, the beats rapidly descend into chaos, a musical parallel to the environmental degradation around us.

The EP closes with "Wireless," an instrumental number. If there is life in outer space, the jazz bands must sound like this. Alternating between hypersonic beats and a raditional arrangement, 1undreads forward thinking is again revealed.

As a group, 1undread constantly strive to balance the integrity of their live performance, which features Brain simultaneously playing bass and drum machine behind Nici's voice, with the technology available in the studio. This shifting dynamic drives both their live and recorded performances in new and sometimes unexpected directions.

"Sometimes It's Not Easy" is available in online stores July 20 on Permanent Damage Records, an independent, Bermuda-based label. For more information contact label@permanentdamagerecords.com or visit
