Flying the flag of punk when many had moved on.,

I remember reading an interview with Mensi from the Upstarts who once said he would see it as the ultimate compliment to be compared to the Clash. Well here on this album the comparaison could easily be made.
The Upstarts play a fast raw Clash style punk with lyrics for the working class. Like the Clash they wear there politics on their sleeves and don't hide their political views or support for causes they see as worthy (Such as songs like "Guns for the Afghan rebels") The album probably stands out in that the clear patriotism of the band in the song "England" proves that patriotism and racism are not one and the same, something the far right at the time (and to some extent still do) try hard to instill in the public mind. Kids on the street still sounds as raw and powerful now as it did then. Mensi may not be the most melodic singer in the world but for raw energy and courage of conviction, the Upstarts are second to none.

anthems for the working man,

Metzy, and the boys are probably the best of the 80,s Oi bands to come out of the north of England at this time. The fear of unemployment,The pride in a socialy bankrupt England, and true working class ethics are all expounded in this album. Some of the songs lyrics may seem trite and dated now.But thew a big punch in the Bad old Thatcher days.Makes a great little history statment and still worth playing.

One of the best record ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!,
By Jamyl D'Angelo (Fort Lauderdale, Florida United States) - See all my reviews

This is the tird studio album of one of the gratest punk/Oi bands ever. The Upstarts were, as anyone reading this should know, one of the founding bands of the entire Oi movement. The "2000000 Voices" lps is among the finest examples of what was so inspiring about the original Oi scene, and should be obtained at all costs.
