Good Speakers, Bad Internal Amplifier, April 14, 2005
This review is from: 2-WAY Powered Abs Molded Speakers (Personal Computers)
I'll start this out by saying I bought a pair of these, Hooked them up, turned them on and the fuses blew on them after only 5 minutes of medium volume play. I replaced the fuses and they blew immediately. I took the amps out and had a look at the amp's design and was very shocked at the inconsistent and poor build. The MOSFETS, aren't even attached to the heat sink. I've never seen an amp that didn't mount the MOSFETs directly to the heat sink. This defeats the entire purpose of the heat sink. The low-pass crossover in one unit had a 15 guage inductor coil, and the other one had an 18 guage inductor coil. One of the resistors was shorted out against another due to improper installing. The location of the frequency cancellation magnet, which the power supply runs through in order to eliminate hum, is only half an inch away from the low pass inductor, which can change the inductance of the circuit causing a different cross-over point than intended. I highly recommend that you don't buy either one of the powered units from Gemini.
