Review updated 9Aug12

1) Elmers "Ultimate High Performance" and "Sticky Ass" are also Polyurethane (PU) glues and (as far as I can tell) they're as good as Gorilla but less expensive. I have also used PL brand and can't tell any notable difference between the four. Have not used Sumo but I understand it sets up faster and as a result apparently has a much more limited shelf life (this is generally not a good thing - see item #3)

2) Gorilla Glue (In my opinion) has thought out their bottle and cap design better than the competition. While this seems like a minor thing, it really makes a BIG difference in not being messy or wasting glue (See #4)

3) PU glues work differently - they foam up and expand in the presence of moisture and then harden. This means you will need to think about where the glue comes out and how to keep it from making a mess. Masking tape is your friend.

4) PU glues have a limited shelf life and you probably don't need as much as you think. Due to the expansion (see #3) you use a LOT less than other types of glue. 4 oz should be MORE than enough for most people, 8 oz is a BIG bottle. I personally buy the 2 oz bottle unless I have a major project. PU Glues suck moisture out of the air so unless you plan on using it up within a year or two, a LOT is going to go to waste. Don't ask me how I know this.

5) PU Glue is FANTASTIC for lots of things but woodworking glues are still better for woodworking (see #7). They are stronger and you can't clean PU glues up with water the way you can even with the waterproof Titebond products. Also if you use biscuits you will have to moisten them separately to get them to swell.

6) KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND ANIMALS!

Pros:
-Really tough glue
-More flexible than super glue
-Waterproof
-Works on many surfaces, metals, wood, ceramics, some plastics, etc. Best for wood applications.

Cons:
-It expands, drips and produce tiny bubbles during the drying process. Definitely not for repairing your Lladros or others applications that require hairline precision.
-Glue is not clear but yellow. Very noticeable, not good if you really want a clean finish.
-Make sure you really clean the tip of the bottle or it will be hard to open and use it the next time
-Not cheap

I discovered this great item in our "fix-it" cabinet one day when my granddaughter's crocs had lost one part of the velcro closure. I put the tiniest dab of Gorilla glue on the wetted croc and attached the velcro piece and held it there with a clothespin overnight. TA DA! It has held tight ever since.

I wanted to replace upholstery on my vintage army issue metal office chair. I couldn't staple new upholstery into metal, so once again, Gorilla glue to the rescue. After months of use, the upholstery is still on tight.

Of course it works on the obvious like wood when dampened a bit on one surface, but I am amazed at the versatility of the glue.

I like the 2 ounce size of smaller because it will dry up around the opening after awhile and be hard to use, so it just makes sense to use it up and buy a new bottle sooner than later.

Use it SPARINGLY, it expands a lot into a foamy sort of glue. If you don't use it SPARINGLY it will seep out and be a mess. If you use it SPARINGLY, it will hold like a chimp. I am crazy in love with the stuff!

"Gorilla Glue" has become one of the most used "tools" in our house. We have used it to repair wooden chairs, fix a wooden medicine chest, glue soles back on to sneekers, fill cracks in a wall, and at least half a dozen other fixes in the past month.

Here are my observations:

* You must read the directions!
* Surface needs to be damp for the glue to work
* Use clamps when possible
* It expands a *LOT*, use with caution or you might accidently glue your project to the table as it expands overnight! This happend to me :-)
* This is strong glue and hard to get off once it is on a surface

Highly recommended!

This glue is ok but dries up in 2 oz. bottle after one use. Tried to use it after two weeks and it dried up. So unless you have a lot of extra cash do not purchase until they change the packaging so you can use it more than one time.

The "pro" side of this product is that it IS very strong. It also sets up reasonably quickly.

HOWEVER -

It doesn't last long in the bottle! Once you open it, it pretty much has a few months until useless. I find that in FL, the humidity, even indoors, is enough to cause this glue to harden even faster. I got one use out of this glue and ended up throwing 98% of it away as a result. It's too expensive for that.

Super Glue always had that problem, too, but they at least got smart enough to put their glue in multiple tubes scarcely the size of the tip of a pencil. When it dries up, you throw it away, opening up another small tube. Gorilla Glue would have much more value if packaged this way.

Additionally, I find the following problems:

- It expands a lot. If not securely clamped, it will not only deform the joint but ooze out. Now, this is good for filling the joint with glue so it has its places, as long as deformation and oozing is not a harm.

- Messy. This overlaps with the upper issue but it deserves its own caveat. It's also hell to clean up (wear gloves)!

- Requires clamps. Some things just can't be clamped. I tried to put a broken toilet lid back together; what a mess! It deformed and had raised ridges wherever the joints were. Ever try to clamp the corer of a toilet tank lid?

All in all, it's not a bad glue for the right application, but the problems, the waste and the high price put it way down the list compared to others. Be sure you're willing to put up with the problems it brings before you buy.
