Laser Failure,
By Ron Hallberg (Springfield, Il USA) - See all my reviews Note: after writing the above review, I returned the laser and the company promptly replaced it. Therefore, an amended review would be 4 stars.

Best bang for the buck,
This review is from: NcStar 20-60 X 60 Green Lens Red Laser Spotting Scope with Tripod (Sports)
For the price you will be hard pressed to find a better spotting scope. Very clear images in nearly all lighting conditions from 20-40x. On a cloudy day 60x is a little dim but on a sunny day there is no problem. I have no trouble focusing at any magnification. The body of the scope is nice and solid. I like how the objective lens cover can be pulled out and used for a lens shade. I have had no fogging problems. My laser works and it is relativity easy to 'sight in' with the view of the scope but I really don't see the purpose. I does help in aligning the scope at distances less then 50-60yds but you can't see it (without the scope) past that distance in daylight. The tripod is kinda of cheap but it is light weight and works fine. I really don't see how one could break/bend it unless they kept throwing it at a wall.

This review is from: NcStar 20-60 X 60 Green Lens Red Laser Spotting Scope with Tripod (Sports)
Pros-Price, build quality of housing, nice enough case. Cons-soft optics, tripodI first wrote a review and was a little critical of the scope, but after using it a few more times its starting to grow on me and I think I was just expecting a little too much from it, especially since its my first spotting scope, so here is my revised review. Like I said, its my first scope, so problems I see may even show up in more expensive scopes. The scope isn't very sharp, but just sharp enough that at 20x you can see .22 holes punched in paper at 50 yds. At 100 yds you can see larger calibers zoomed in a bit, but the more you zoom the softer it gets. We did some longer shoots at around 275 yds at plate sized targets and were using it to locate hits in the dirt beside the targets and it worked OK for that. Its been really handy to take to the range (well, our "range" is an old mine a mile from our house) and saved a lot of walking. The build quality is excellent and the exterior is rubberized....nice touch. The lens caps are good and the focus is smooth enough. The laser, while being interesting, is of little use unless you are going to shoot right at the edge of dark. I mean really, you are only going to need a scope if you are shooting (or looking at anything) past 50 yds, and at that distance do you really think you could see the laser during the day? The tripod is useless, luckily I have a real tripod for my camera and it does the trick. Plan on getting a full size tripod. Don't buy this to go birding or any other uses that you will need something fairly sharp and bright, I imagine you would be pretty disappointed.

This NcStar scope was a sad disappointment at the range for anything beyond 25 yards with a .22 or .233 caliber sized hole. The optical quality is really not very good, producing blurry images the higher the magnification being used. The included laser pointer is almost useless outside in full daylight and the included tripod is such low quality that I was concerned about actually using it. The included soft carrying case is alright, holding the scope and tripod well enough.Long story short I returned it for a refund, which is a fairly painless process and one of the reasons for shopping at Amazon. I recommend Barska CO11502 20-60x60 Waterproof Straight Spotting Scope with Tripod, which was offered on an Amazon "Gold Box" deal for a few bucks more than this one, but knowing what I know now it would worth even the regular price difference. Not Recommended! CFH |
