These Mylar bags filters sunlight and provide an additional oxygen and moisture barrier. To seal Mylar bags simply take a hot iron and iron the opening shut or, for best results, use a Teflon coated heat sealer. This package includes 20 - Gallon Size (10"X14") 3.5 mil. thick Mylar Bags. I will be returning my order of these bags. I have plenty of past experience with mylar bags, in the past I have always used the 5 or 7 mil bags because they are much stronger. These bags are 3.5 mil (I have never used 3.5 mil bags before), and are so thin that you can see right through them (when holding up to light). I can actually read the words on my computer screen when looking through one side of this bag. This is not possible with the 5 mil bags. If the food you're storing is sensitive to light (like dry milk) these bags will not protect it. Most all foods are affected by light (known as photodegradation) and as a result can affect flavor, color & vitamin loss. So for maximum shelf life, darker is better. They also had a very strong chemical smell inside them (smells exactly like super glue), and I've never noticed this smell with other bags. I actually became nauseous after smelling the bag a few times, trying to remember what that very familiar smell was. I don't know if this is OK or not, but after using the more expensive, better quality bags in the past, I think I will spend the extra money and rest assured.
I bought these to make smaller kits of food (like MRE's) however they are so thin, I would not trust them in my pack or out on the trail- these would puncture or tear easily.
These bags are cheap enough, but you get what you pay for. I would recommend 5 or 7 mil bags. Unfortunately I cannot find many 5 mil bags on Amazon in the 1 gallon size however I will be ordering again from USAEmergencySupply dot com which has the best product and also the best prices I have found anywhere in my MANY searches across the net. I love Amazon but it's not always the best option.

These are easy to use. Just fill with your product, leaving space for a seal. Throw in an oxygen absorber, lay across a rod and iron all but about 2", put your crevice attachment on the vacuum and stick it in the hole you left. Vacuum out the air, pull out the hose and seal quickly. Works best if you do not overfill the bags. This will keep for a very long time.

Be aware that these mylar bags are translucent!! I received them today and I can see through them. Not good for food storage unless they can be stored in the dark...

These are as described and packaged well. They are easy to use and large enough for bulky items. One must be cautious of what is stored in them because in my opinion they are not heavy enough to store light sensitive foods. We use them for rice and beans that has been sealed in seal-a-meal bags with an oxygen absorber then placed into a mylar bag before storing. They do the job.

I ordered these and when they came realized there are not tips or instructions on how to seal them or how to store them.

I purchased these bags as well and could see through as mentioned in another review, I opened them and held one side up to the bright light bulb on my chandelier and could see through them. However you have really struggle to see the light through them and if you are using them for food storage you are probably keeping them inside another container like a bucket etc. If I were keeping them on a shelf in the direct light of a window, I would be concerned. Otherwise not.
Nor was there any odor other than what faint odor mylar does have. I liked these very much and they were shipped quickly and safely. I would recommend these to my family and friends.

The directions state to use a hot iron to seal. I used the food saver. If I seal it 2-4 times in a row, it will seal the bag. The bag is thinner, but I used it for food gifts for Christmas, not long term food storage. I have plenty left for various other projects and storage solutions.
