Product Description

From the Manufacturer

McLane - manufacturing the best quality, precision cutting lawn and garden equipment since 1946. The McLane facility covers over 75,000 square feet in the city of Paramount, CA. They only use Briggs & Stratton and Honda high performance engines. McLane produces reel mowers, green mowers, rotary mowers, and edgers. Reel mowers are ideal for cutting Bermuda and St. Augustine type grasses. Rotary mowers tear at the grass, leaving them open to disease. Reel mowers snip the grass, cutting each blade like a pair of scissors. It's a precise, clean cut that makes for a healthier and more attractive lawn. And because of the cutting action of a reel mower you can leave reel clippings on the lawn. Reel mowers create a fine spray of clippings that act as a mulch and decompose quickly, releasing nitrogen into the lawn. Over the course of a cutting season, that mulch is equivalent to a free application of fertilizer. McLane has many dealers and distributors located nation wide for your convenience. For a McLane dealer in your area please contact us by phone at (562) 633-8158 or email info@mclanemower.com.

Overall it is a GREAT mower.

The idea of the grass being thrown forward, thus recutting it, is a great idea, but it leaves a good amount of cuttings on the grass and when it dries it is unsightly.

I’m interested in seeing my rating at that time too.

I purchased my McLane Reel mower several years ago at an estate sale. It had been used on a huge lawn of turf grass.
(bermuda).

The yard had the appearance of a golf course. While the machine was a little rusty...the briggs magnetron 3hp engine started on the third pull. The mower is the envy of the neighborhood, as it's self propelled wheels push through my St. Augustine grass with precision and ease.

The front mounted grass catcher (( an option worth purchasing )) seems bulky and in the way, but is not.

This is a professional machine in every sense of the word.

I highly recommend the McLane Mower to any pro; or home owner who is serious about the appearance of their lawn.

There's no doubt the machine is well made. The difficulty I have had with it is there's no throttle control. You have to work around that. If you have a huge lawn then this probably wouldn't be a problem, but my yard isn't huge. The machine works me to death. I had Zoysia grass laid and pictured a well manicured lawn. Not exactly a home run. Perhaps next spring it might be better. The difficulty is the height of the blades. I wish there was a way to raise it up higher than the allowable settings, but that's not easy to do. Also, the front grass catcher only picks up small amount of grass before the grass backs up into the reel. Sometimes I could go only 15 to 20 feet and it clogged up the reel. The idea of the grass being thrown forward, thus recutting it, is a great idea, but it leaves a good amount of cuttings on the grass and when it dries it is unsightly. I have to go over the lawn with my Honda rotary mower to clean up the cuttings. Right now, this is not working out as I anticipated, but, again, perhaps after the sod settles by next spring it may work out. My first cutting was 6 weeks after it was laid.

I have purchased this only 3 months ago and used it at least twice monthly and I am vey happy with it. I love the golf course green type finish I get and so enjoyed it I was tempted to offer to mow some of the other neighbourhood lawns. The grass catcher at the front is a bit cumbersome when having to mow toward a wall or hedge and of course it is a bit weighty but other than that great.

This is the mower that the rich people had back when cars had fins. The Honda motor is built like a watch meant to last for a hundred years.
Works nice on a nice lawn. Has trouble cutting weeds. Little vibration, dust or noise. Takes some getting used to, and requires additional parts to mow taller grass (available at the local hardware store). The clippings do not clump so the catcher is not needed, except as a weight to keep the front wheels down when going up hill.
One problem is that the item is listed as a 20-4G-10, and this was not the model that was sent. A less expensive model, the 20-4G-7 is what you will get.

This is my second McLane mower in 35years. The Honda is a gas hog compared to B/S.engines. There has been several small changes but still a grate mower for the lower cut grasses. Gives a greens cut getting me a lot of comments on the lawn.
It seems as the Honda was added as an after thought so it would meet CARB specs.
Overall it is a GREAT mower. It will outlast me I'm sure.

Mower is great except the drive belt was the wrong size. I had to go buy the right size belt for $9.00
