Book Description

October 11, 2011

There's no need to reinvent the wheel every time you run into a problem with ASP.NET's Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework. This concise cookbook provides recipes to help you solve tasks many web developers encounter every day. Each recipe includes the C# code you need, along with a complete working example of how to implement the solution. Learn practical techniques for applying user authentication, providing faster page reloads, validating user data, filtering search results, and many other issues related to MVC3 development.

These recipes help you:

  • Restrict access to views with password protection
  • Allow users to upload and save a file to your website
  • Implement AJAX to allow users to see updated content quickly
  • Validate form input to ensure the data you capture is what you expect
  • Create thumbnails to preview images rather than view them full-size
  • Give your web application the ability to change languages
  • Use CAPTCHA to prevent automated programs from completing forms
  • Make URLs more user- and search-engine-friendly with the MapRoute function

1.0 out of 5 stars caveat emptor, January 30, 2012
This review is from: 20 Recipes for Programming MVC 3: Faster, Smarter Web Development (Paperback)
I am amazed that O'Reilly would permit the publishing of this book. Usually they are quite reputable in the "Recipes" series. Not the case here. Very disappointed in this title. A mere 110 pages long, most of it is boilerplate with no real insights on any challenging problem. Go with Sanderson's book if you really want to learn about MVC. I'm going to return this book. Terrible.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent code but some bad practices., January 25, 2012

There are a few decent and practical examples in the book. However, I'm weary of taking advice from someone who advocates plain-text password retrieval. This is a highly unsafe practice that should never be implemented for any reason. Ever. Period. (we clear?)

Initially I was not too impressed by this book, however if you're moving toward ASP.Net MVC, this maybe helpful. I found the price very good!
