5.0 out of 5 stars So many possibilities!
I had checked this book out at the library. I knew I wouldn't be able to turn loose of it, so ordered one for my personal use thru Amazon. So many blocks and so many possibilities with all of those patterns. I have been trying each one out. I didn't even know how to do a cable stitch, and the easy instructions in the back of the book showed JUST how easy that stitch was...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Patterns, but Patterns are Not Too User-Friendly

The photos in this book are fantastic and the squares she presents are beautiful. I just love reading this book for ideas and inspiration, although I **am** contemplating a project to create an afghan with these squares. One thing I especially like is how she suggests a collection of compatible squares for each individual square in the book.

Even my non-knitting daughter loves poring over this book for ideas of things I could knit for us. I look forward to using this book as a platform for learning new techniques and am very happy that I purchased it.

I found this book very helpful with good instructions. I am not a very advanced knitter, but there are instructions for everyone from beginner to accomplished.

I got this book to help me with designs for an afghan block swap project that I am doing. The patterns in here are lovely, but I have a few reservations about recommending this book:

First of all, the patterns given are for making 6" square blocks only. No gauge is given for any of the patterns. Second, the designs are written for using DK weight yarn. (And the author didn't state that all the yarns used were DK weight until the back of the book!)

These facts make it quite difficult for me to increase the block designs to what I am interested in making, which is a 12" square block using worsted weight yarn.

So far, though, once I figured out the correct gauge for my project, the designs do seem to be free of errors.

If you are interested in making an afghan using DK weight yarn, this book would be much more useful to you. But on the flip side, an afghan made with DK-weight yarn is not going to be as substantially warm as one made with worsted yarn.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable knitting, August 9, 2005

I really like the blocks in this book. My knitting time is limited and I can usually finish a block in one or two sittings. The blocks are so portable that you don't have to drag a big project around to knit on the go and I found lots of blocks that I really like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some inspiration, many errors, March 15, 2008

There are some excellent ideas in this book, however, there are numerous errors--especially in the lacy patterns. Only two corrections are listed on publishers site. Could have been a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, February 12, 2008
This review is from: 200 Knitted Blocks: Traditional and Contemporary Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
I love this book! I'm using it to make a blanket for my mother right now; so far, I've knit about 10 different blocks. The instructions are well-written with no mistakes, and each block is shown clearly, some with color variations. There are some suggestions for blocks to combine into blankets or pillows, but I prefer to make up my own design. One caveat: the current picture of the book on Amazon does not show the real cover of the book, the blocks shown in this picture aren't in the book, but the blocks shown on the actual book cover are inside the book. Other than that, there is nothing wrong with it. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to use for skill development, December 23, 2008
This review is from: 200 Knitted Blocks: Traditional and Contemporary Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
I haven't been knitting long, and am self-taught (almost all of my knowledge came from the Stitch & Bitch book as well as knittinghelp.com). I picked up this book with the intention of making a baby blanket for my cousin's baby. I made 30 squares, all different patterns and my skills just exploded.

If you're looking for a LOT of instruction/guidance, this book won't provide it. It does provide some basics in the back (cast on, bind off, etc) but nearly all of the patterns & stitches are easy enough to understand that even a beginner like me can do them with a bit of outside research. This book, plus videos online on how to do things like slip stitch, helped me grow my skills immensely.

The variety of patterns in the book is excellent and versatile enough to make blankets, scarves, baby bibs, washcloths, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly great knitting book, August 3, 2010
This review is from: 200 Knitted Blocks: Traditional and Contemporary Designs to Mix and Match (Paperback)
This is a great knitting book! Blocks are quick, fun and portable to knit, and make a great way to learn new techniques in a simple fashion. I'm sure you could find most of these patterns on the internet, but quite frankly, I don't have that kind of time. Seeing so many blocks together in one book, with such a variety of colorways inspires me to think about things differently, and explore combination's I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. I want to knit blankets for each of my children and this book is going to help make that desire a reality. To me this book isn't a plan to follow slavishly, but a jumping off point to unleash my own creativity. I find this to be a keeper in my knitting library!
The only downfall I see is that it's out of print. But if you look around, you can still find copies of it at reasonable prices.
