Great Examples of Letters for Job Seekers-And Fun to Read,
By Dale Susan Brown "Dale Susan Brown" (Washington D.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 200 Letters for Job Hunters (Paperback)
After a section on writing effective correspondence, this book provides models of the many letters needed in a job-seeking campaign, including 1) telling your friends about your job hunt; 2) requesting a meeting; 3) announcing your availability for part-time, temporary and consulting work; 4) substitutes for resumes; 5) targeted mailings to employment agencies; 6) respnses to want ads; 7) guidance to references and information on your achievements; 8) introductions to hiring officials you do not know; 9) preparing your prospects for a phone call; 10) a response form that makes it easy for people to reply; 11) informing people who might help you find a "hidden" job; and 12) thank you letters informing people you found a job! This is one of the best books in the hundreds I read for possible inclusion in the bibiography of Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding A Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder and Dyslexia by Dale S. Brown.

Letters are back, but only if you don't ask. Don't believe these 200 letters are comprehensive,

The value of this book is realized when you pull out some paragraphs for revision. Do not for a moment believe 200 letters will cover much ground. This is just to get you started but you probably won't find one paragraph you can use without editing.
Yes, letters are back and they can make an impact. If you ask, you'll be told to email instead and your email might never be seen by the intended recipient. Letters can make a difference because they're tangible, and executives seldom get or give an individualized letter anymore. A well-targeted and well-written letter is highly likely to reach the intended recipient and spend a couple minutes on his or her desk. Do not underestimate the value of that. But one has to do some homework, and I think this book is just part of what may be an effective process. |
