5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection Presented in Widescreen September 8, 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was a bit hesitant to buy this collection because it was listed as having an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. However, it was also listed as being Widescreen..... so I took a chance and ordered it.

When it arrived I was happy to find that all 4 movies are presented in what appears to be their original theatrical widescreen aspect ratios, although the actual numbers aren't listed on the DVDs or the box.

What it does say on the back of the box is that both The Time Machine and 2001 are presented in the widescreen format preserving the original theatrical aspect ratio..... enhanced for widescreen TVs.

The transfers look clean and the audio is crystal clear (listed as Dolby 5.1). As has been noted these are pretty much bare bones presentations, but you get 4 excellent movies on 2 double sided DVDs for a good price. Works for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn Your Aspect Ratios October 23, 2007
Format:Blu-ray
In regards to the uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, as a Director of Photography, I can state unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Super Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack). Super Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the extraordinary effort of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the original undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the original camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more common optical composite dupe negative inserts. Amazing. That is why it looks as good as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Beautiful Film...and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

A true Visual Masterpiece.

1.0 out of 5 stars worthless
A narrative with no purpose is not worth telling.
This is one of them. Unfortunately this is not worth the 1 star I had to give it.

1.0 out of 5 stars OMG! What did I just watch?
The story's plot as a whole, not to mention any attempt of any social commentary, is lost in the abstruse, ambiguous, and disjointed nature in which the story is told. Read more

Something Got Chopped
The movie was filmed in a 2.20:1 AR. Nothing is chopped from the BR disc.

What is this film saying?
I think the singular meaning that you're seeking just doesn't exist. This film is made in a way that forces one to ponder it's meaning, I think that it was never intended to be fully explained. That's the simple beauty in a film like this, it says so much without saying much at all. I think the... Read more

2001 is indeed a good film but...
To Nick Masters,

Kubrick over-rated? The movie should be re-made? I suppose that Citizen Kane and Casablanca should be re-made as well for those of you who find these films difficult because they make you think.

Let me put it this way. Think about your favorite movie. Now imagine it's 40... Read more

Quality of BluRay Disc
"2001:" Looks OUTSTANDING.

That's my opinion, at least.
When I show off to others the capability of what a Blu-ray disc can do,
this is the title I use.

It is definitely a major step up from the early DVD's,
including some great special features.

If you read the reviews,

Almost all movies since the dawn of motion picture have been shot on 35mm film. All new hollywood movies are still shot with 35mm cameras.
