Review

"Good marketing info was never more important. Here it is--concise, up to date, effective." -- Terrence Brown, Director, Society of Illustrators

"Single best source for finding key individuals who can and will commission your work." -- Steven R. Shchubert, National Executive Director, Graphic Artists Guild --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Many graphic designers have succeeded in the design business with the help of the Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market: 2,500 places to sell your art and design. In the new edition, readers share their successes and failures to help others get started.

Barbara Griffel, known for her fashion illustration said she uses Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market as one of her strategies to sell her work. She believes that marketing your work has to be a constant effort. According to Griffel, "You've got to keep moving - like a shark. If you send out 50 samples, and you only get one response, you can't dwell on the ones that didn't respond. One response is great! That one client may end up giving you a lot of work." Griffel also does something unique with all the samples she sends out. Each one includes her signature in bold black strokes along with a tag line. "When you think of any successful corporation or product a distinct image comes to mind. They always keep the same set of color and the same logo - and they usually have a tag line." It works for corporate America and the same strategy can work for you, says Griffel. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars a "must have" (2002 Edition), October 27, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're an artist, illustrator, cartoonist, just starting out or a seasoned pro, this is one that belongs in your book collection on a yearly basis.
The 2002 edition starts out with an intro from the editor (thank you Mary Cox for this invaluable book) and a "Keynote Address" from speaker/consultant Ilise Benun on self-promotion.

The 2nd section continues with "Business & Marketing Seminars", tips and guides that are very informative. Lance J. Klass, president of Porterfield's Fine Art Licensing (one of the best in the field) writes "Ten Secrets to Success in Art Licensing", and anything Mr. Klass writes is worth reading, reading again, and memorizing !

The terrific Jim Hunt, cartoonist extraordinaire, writes "From the Front Lines...Practical Advice from Freelancers to Freelancers", and interviews 3 successful illustrators...I like the answers to Jim's question: "Besides having a really "cool boss", how has working for yourself changed your approach towards getting up and going to work each day ?".
Of these and the 8 other articles, there will be at least half that you'll find fit in to your line of work, and you're sure to learn, and be motivated by them.

3rd section: "The Markets". Listings on the many places you can market your work, and this needs to be updated yearly, as you'll find new entries, and very important, many new contact people on the listings from previous years (each listing is marked with an icon if it's new or has a change of address/contact person).
The listings run the gamut from greeting cards to record labels, and there are 4 "Insider Reports" included.
Many of the listings have web sites, which I always check, to see if the style represented is one I'd fit into.

4th section: Artist's reps, web sites, glossary and indexes.
It's a great book...it will help keep you in touch with what's out there, make you realize that there are a lot of opportunities to tap into, and if you're ever feeling "stuck", open it's pages, and send some post cards, slides, etc. to one or more of its market entries...it will get you moving, and you never know, you just might get a positive response.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great selling source and much more (2000 Edition), July 31, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a must for any artist or illustrator who wants to get his work seen by a wider audience. The listings are great and have details such as who to contact and what their terms are. Also, many companies have a web site so you can see if your work would "Fit in" their catalog. What I most like about this book are the articles. "Do's and Don'ts of Art Licensing" is invaluable...read this before signing a contract.. please ! My favorite, however, are the "Success Stories". One of them, by Jim Hunt, a terrific cartoonist, tells how to use your e-mail & web site for maximum no-cost marketing. I tried it. It works. Thank you Jim ! You won't regret getting this book...it's a good investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars very helpful, October 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 2001 Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market (Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market, 2001) (Paperback)
I found this book to be an excellent help to those wanting to make a living with their art. It has lots of "how to" information , interviews and tips from sucessful artists. Being a visual artist myself, I would like to see more information under the gallery section. The information in this book gets outdated fast, so buy the latest edition.
