Book Description

March 1, 2001 0810944901 978-0810944909 1St Edition
From the prophetic vision of a lunar voyage in Fritz Lang’s science fiction film Woman in the Moon to the multistage rocket that propelled astronauts to the moon 40 years later, this bold, original work examines design for space travel in both fantasy and reality. A breathtaking look at the structures built to follow humankind’s dreams out into the cosmos, it accompanies an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

The 230 illustrations range from sci-fi film stills to computer-rendered images of rockets and space stations. The 14 essays look at our perceptions of the universe, the conquest of space, and the inhabitation of that wilderness before and after the advent of space travel. From the space station in Stanley Kubrick’s legendary intergalactic fantasy 2001: A Space Odyssey to NASA’s actual design for the orbiting International Space Station, these fresh, accessible perspectives on the traditionally scientific subject of space exploration offer new ways to look at one of the most significant accomplishments of our time.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Is there a space age aesthetic? This spin-off from an exhibition organized by Chicago's Art Institute and Seattle's Museum of Flight explores that question in an intriguing mixture of images and essays. Rocket scientists aren't artists per se, but most of them will admit to artistic inspiration. Take the inventors of the German V-2 missile. They were enthralled by Fritz Lang's film Frau im Mond (Woman in the Moon, 1929). Furthermore, after the war, they returned to and expounded on their dreams of moon and Mars missions in a visionary set of Collier's articles, whose artwork remains a fascinating presentation of space flight. The book's essayists elaborate on the public face of rocketry, critiquing the architecture of space age infrastructure (e.g., the gigantic Vehicle Assembly Building); exhibits on space flight, including the Soviet one on style in space design, that were presented at fairs; and movie design conceptions--above all, those of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
