This review is from: 2006-2007 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano (Annual Supplement to the Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano) (Paperback)
This edition contains mostly correct information. I used it to provide a little info to a client about a piano and then we visited the dealer and found out that the info was only partially correct. HOWEVER, I would not have had any where to start without this book. It would be difficult to do a book on current market conditions without some chance of minor discrepancies to occur, anyway. I am glad that I have this book as it works as a great starting point for info on current Piano industry players.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, August 9, 2006
Anyone buying a piano should have this book. It tells you how to work around a pressuring salesman (yes, they have moved even into the piano business) and the common tactics that they use. It gives accurate reviews of virtually every piano manufacturer out there, and gives the reader an idea of what things to look for in terms of quality. This book is a must especially for one looking to purchase a used piano. This book offers a very helpful routine that one should use to inspect a prospective purchase, and tips on different damages that could affect the quality of sound, touch, etc. It also covers piano care, piano FAQs, how to move a piano, etc. But, keep in mind that YOU MUST BUY THE YEARLY SUPPLEMENT. Though this book offers ratings and other information abount pianos, this book alone does NOT contain pricing. Also, though the field knowledge in this book is broad, there are also several other problems not addressed in this book that I would have though would be included.

This review is from: 2006-2007 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano (Annual Supplement to the Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano) (Paperback)
We were in the market to buy a piano for my daughter and knew nothing about how to buy a piano, what they cost or how they work. So after doing some searching we bought Larry Fine's The Piano Book: Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano. It really opened out eyes to the world of the piano. It gave us the confidence and knowledge to become better informed consumers. Before visiting out first store we got the up to date 2006-2007 Annual supplement to The Piano Book to get the most recent prices and changes to the piano industry. It allowed us to narrow our search and concentrate on two specific brands and models. This book easily saved us over $1000 on the purchase of our beautiful piano. We would highly recommend Larry Fine's Book plus the Annual Supplement to anyone who's in the market to buy a piano.

I purchased this book to get an idea of how much specific pianos would cost, and I found the information to be accurate. Aside from pricing and some commentary on a few pianos, there is not much more information. It is indeed exactly what it says, a supplement. Purchase the Piano Book by the author for an excellent book on piano buying.

If you're buying a piano -- new or used, vertical or grand -- you need this supplement. Why? Not only does it show current MSRPs for the pianos, but it also gives an update on various piano manufacturers. There's nothing worse that relying on out-of-date information.
