Audi wins Le Mans with DIESEL power!!!, April 1, 2007
This review is from: 2006 Le Mans 24 Hours (Hardcover)
Yes, that's right. The legendary Audi R8 was retired in 2006 after claiming 5 Le Mans wins (in 6 years), 6 straight Sebring wins, and 6 straight wins at the Petit Le Mans. Not a bad record, eh? Of course, Audi knew a replacement was in order, but how would they build a new car that could successfully fill the R8's shoes? The answer was INNOVATION. Audi's replacement was the new DIESEL powered Audi R10/Diesel TDI; the first diesel racecar ever built with a realistic chance of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After winning the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring on its debut, the two works Audi's went to Le Mans to do battle with Henri Pescarolo's awesome Judd-powered C60-H's. At the end of the gruelling 24 hour race, the two Audis crossed the line first (and third) overall. This 2006 yearbook takes you step by step through all the action of the 24 hour race with superb photos and tons of information. Let me just say that they annuals are REQUIRED for any fan of endurance racing. Most of the editions are in English but be careful.....some are in French and ONLY available in French (1982 is a prime example). The earlier editions from the late 1970's through early 1980's feature mostly black and white photos but there's NO SHORTAGE of them: Every page is full of detailed pictures from that year's 24 hour race. The newer editions from the mid-1990's forward are in full color and the photos are FANTASTIC! The 2006 edition features all the statistics regarding every car entered in the race; of course, Audi claimed the overall victory, but it also follows the three other classes as well. Ray Mallock Ltd. took top honors in the LMP2 category again with their Lola EX264/MG, Corvette Racing claimed their FIFTH win in GT1 up against a terrific field including Aston Martins, a Saleen S7R, Ferrari 550 Maranellos, and a Lamborghini Murcielago R/GT. Finally, in the "baby" class (GT2) PANOZ finally scored a class win when the class-leading Porsche 996 GT3 RSR experienced problems in the final hours of the race. It was a particularly exciting day for Don Panoz (Founder of the American Le Mans Series) because this was the 10th year that Panoz cars have participated in the race. Don was also given the super-exclusive "Spirit of Le Mans" award along with 7-time winner Tom Kristensen. Winning the class against Porsche, Ferrari, and Spyker is certainly something he'll remember for the rest of his life! Way to go Panoz! Each book gives you an in depth look at the men/women and machines that take part in the gruelling race. The books usually start off with a historical section devoted to some sort of significant achievement at Le Mans. For example, Cadillac returned to La Sarthe in 2000 for the first time in decades so the historical section was devoted to Cadillacs at Le Mans. The same has been done for Corvette, Bentley, Aston Martin, etc. If there are no particular marques making a historic return to the race, then the section usually talks about what happened decades ago. For instance, if you have a 2002 annual you'll be able to see all the things that happened in years ending in 2. The books show you the complete entry list for the year (One car per page) as well as the drivers, sponsers, etc. Detailed statistics are provided regarding practice times, qualifying, the race itself (Hour by Hour), and finally the race results. The books are so well detailed they even give you the hour by hour pit stops of each individual car along with mountains of additional information. These books are well worth the price of owning them but be warned.....the older they get, the harder they will be to find and they will be EXSPENSIVE! (Yes, these books do appreciate in value) I have a rare English version of the 1979 race that has never been opened.....try finding one of those! The easiest edition to find right now is the 2003 annual (Won by Bentley). Anything older than 1999, however, is practically impossible. Try to buy them the same year they come out; that way you can be reasonably sure about finding a copy.
