If you can listen, you can learn the General exam!,

This review is from: 2007-11 General Class Audio Theory Course (Audio CD)
I purchased Gordon West's Technician book and CD set along with the General book and CD set in early April. My goal was to prepare for concurrent testing for both licenses, provided I passed the Technician exam. I read the books, highlighting questions, answers and Gordo's memory tips on the ones that gave me trouble. The CD's were invaluable as they allowed me to use daily commuting time to listen to Gordo's explanations and memory joggers. On May 1, I passed both tests (Technician with no errors and General with one wrong answer) in a total of 18 minutes including time to grade the Technician exam. I've ordered his NEW Extra study materials and anticipate the same degree of quick, sound success. If you want to get your ham ticket, trust Gordo!

I used the audio cd's in this General Class theory course to pass my general exam in [3] weeks by listening while driving back and forth to work. Thanks Gordo for making such a wonder option available to pass the exam!

Excellent for keeping details in your brain as you drive in the car. But, more importantly, if you're new to HF radio, he presents how various good/bad/indifferent signals sound, including both SSB and CW. In addition, he plays samples of various microphones, gain settings, etc.
Being new to HF, I heard a ton of good material that made me go, "Oh! Now I get it. That's what it sounds like." He also gives fairly good descriptions of Rx/Tx circuits and stages so that you have a little better understanding of how the machines work.

I found the Gordon West General Class Study Guide and Audio CD's to be extremely helpful in preparing for the General Class License Exam test. I also used the ARRL General Class License Study Guide for more depth but I relied on the Gordon West Study Guide and Audio CD's to make sure I learned the correct answers. The short explanations given for the answers gives you the basic understanding of the theory behind the answer and it is often enough so that you can learn the material. I used the audio CD's for enforcement of the answers while driving and working. The practice of grouping like questions together is very helpful and makes learning the material much faster. After studying the guides for a couple of weeks I started taking internet practice tests and was easily able to pass the tests with 90% or better. I then went through the study guide and noted any questions or problems I couldn't answer correctly. I then limited my study to those questions and in some cases the theory behind them. In summary the Gordon West General Class Study Guide is extremely helpful in test preparation and I would recommend it to anyone serious about passing the General Class Exam.

Gordon West's books and cd's are great. Necessary information to pass the test in an understandable format. If you are going to take the test in 2011 this book will help. 2012 you will need to get the new book.

I used this book with the CD set that Gordon also produced, and then studied the ARRL reference while taking practice tests on KB0MGA.net
Using this book with the CD set is just awesome. Gordo makes learning fun and there's a lot of humor in here, as well as a LOT of good, practical advice for moving up to HF. As a "frequent flyer" who spends a lot of time traveling, this was perfect for me to get learning fast and easy. So, if you are looking to go for your General ticket, I highly recommend this book with the CDs, get the ARRL reference, and get going on those practice tests, and you'll be amazed at how actually quick and enjoyable it can be to study for a test! |
