Know what you want out of this book before you buy it.,
By Kate (Miami Beach) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 2007 Photographer's Market (Paperback)
In some situations, photographers who are fine artists, this book is an essential tool for marketing yourself in the next year. (I know, every photographer is a fine artist) Otherwise it may not be as helpful. For a photographer trying to break into the editorial market of something like fashion, the book will just tell you that those periodicals only accept submisions from who they contact and there (of course) is no contact informations for them. This is my thrid year with the photographers market books and as my career has grown I have outgrown these books. However they can be an excellent resorce for a newer photographer and even I have found some new periodicals to contact that I didn't know were out there. But most ever listing of publications is targetted towards buying stock. So just a little heads up.

Less than I was expecting,

I've got to say, I was a little disappointed in the latest offering from the Photographer's Market series. I have been interested in pursuing work with publications in my area and beyond, as I shoot food, interiors, and home decor. There was very little assistance in the publication realm in this update. Even some of the wonderful magazines I know are in existence in my area were not mentioned. Actually, very few were at all. I wonder why this wasn't covered? However, one of my fellow alumi was featured in a profile, and that was neat to see.

Provides a list, but it's not enough,

This book provides a very thorough list of photo buyers and surely photographers can try and contact them by sending portfolios or cold-calling, but in my opinion, you get a lot more exposure on online stock photo agencies like shutterpoint and such. Get the buyers to come to you instead of trying to push your work to them.
The book is a useful resource for serious beginning photographers, but there are more effective ways to start your photo business and get returns on your photos right away.

Providing a list of current publishers for photographers to submit their photographs for publication, this book does what it claims.

Good Reference,

The Photographer's Market books are good reference books to have on the shelf but as another reviewer mentioned, they are only part of the equation. If you are in the business of licensing your images (professional photographers license images - they do not SELL images), this book will complement other reference materials.

This book is excellent. The potential money-making client list is vast and you know exactly what they're looking for. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to sell their photography.
