a lot of the markets are already old, but it's still a good book for finding websites that have more current coverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than A Reference - It Inspires, September 5, 2006
This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
You are a writer, and that's why you are reading this review. The same old question, "Can I justify purchasing this book?" I just received the deluxe version of this book, which is the regular book with a year of online access.

You can't justify not buying this book.

If all you are looking for is having your work published in some unknown literary journal, go to the library and check the reference shelf. However, if you are serious about breaking into the real literary, periodical or book publishing world, lay down some cash and bring "2007 Writers Market" home.

Last year's edition might get you into trouble. Old addresses will result in wasted postage. This year's edition will have up-to-date information.

This is a guide. This is not the Bible. When you see a publication you like, take it a step farther and explore the URL. Don't randomly send out your work. Verify they might like your kind of writing. I've made mistakes in this regard, and could've avoided them had I used this market guide in tandem with the web. This guide will help you prepare intelligently.

It leans heavily toward article writings. Writers who have feature articles especially will find this book useful. This is not Writer's Digest's similar guide, "Novel & Short Story Writers Market," aimed at that major genre.

All the info you want is there: who and how and where to contact a publication; what and if they pay; recent authors they've published; tone and flavor; current needs; turn around from receiving an MS to replying. There are lots of little articles you'll find helpful as well.

One exciting aspect of browsing through this is the ideas you'll get realizing the diversity of publications out there. No matter what seemingly esoteric interest you have, be assured there is probably a publication out there clambering for your expertise.

I have already caught myself looking up aviation and motorcycle publications. Although I neither fly nor ride, I am wondering if I still have some ideas for a piece.

I fully recommend "2007 Writers Market."

4.0 out of 5 stars YOUR GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED, September 8, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
Back in 1991, I was studying creative writing under a published author. The one thing we learned was to expect an average 70 rejections no matter if were beginners or seasoned pros. So if you write something, and you send it to be published, and it is rejected...DON'T GIVE UP!!!
With that in mind let me say that this book is one of, if not THE most, respected publications in its field. There are literally over 1000 different publishers of various types of material in this huge book. Publishers of both fiction and nonfiction, publishers of books as well as magazine publishers, complete with addresses and in some cases, phone numbers, email addresses, and websites.
This huge publication houses some of the most respected names in writing, which is another bonus of this book. You get "THE BIG BOYS", plus you get smaller publishers. Publishers of religious material, porn, poetry, short stories, novels, history, sports, hobbies, and much much more. Another bonus of this fine publication, is that it has tips for how to increase your chances of being published as well as notes some of the legal aspects of the art.
My first two articles I had printed and PAID for, were the result of sending my material to publishers in this handy guide.
So if you're looking for an publication that will greatly increase your chances of getting published, you need this long time established tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Took me from serving cokes to signing autographs, April 17, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
People always ask me how I went from a Flight Attendant to signing a 3 book deal with a major publisher. The answer is I started with one sale, and that first sale was because of THE WRITERS MARKET. After that first sale, I moved on to bigger sales, in the Magazine Market, which I also found in THE WRITERS MARKET. Then I moved into books. I contacted the publisher first. Then when they were interested I got a literary agent. You can do the same. THE WRITERS MARKET - can change your life. It did mine.

Some of the tips in Writer's Market 2007 you already know. That being said, you still need this valuable resource. It contains some information that, even if you alreay know, or think you know, is very good to be reminded of.

Using this reference, you greatly increse your odds of being signed. Follow the steps, use the professional courtesy, and follow protocol. These along with persistence will get you your acceptance letter.

Buy it. Read it. Live it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource for authors seeking publishers, April 11, 2007
This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
As a first time author I have used only those sections relevant to book publishers ...well organized and very informative with an index to locate publishers aligned with particular book types or genres. Also, useful information on the content and format used in writing query letters ( to pitch your book concept ) with both "good" and "bad" examples. New writers might quickly conclude that this is just the portal to a long journey. The compilation of publishers is extensive .... also included - consumer magazines and trade journals. Another nice touch, 50 literary agents were profiled along with the strong inference or my interpretation that one is best served ( if you go the agency route versus contacting publishers directly ) to determine if revenues are sourced from actual book sales or from services sold to wannabe authors. Bottom-line, great value for the money.

This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
This is great tool for writers (especially unpublished) who are searching for avenues to make it in print. It describes not only what markets an agent, publisher, or magazine serves, but offers professional advice on how to approach them. It will help the uninitiated avoid embarrasing pitfalls, and provide a full spectrum of opportunity for all, in one convient, well-organized package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a Must for a Serious Writer's Arsenal, October 24, 2006
This review is from: 2007 Writer's Market (Paperback)
Writers want to write. They don't want to spend time searching for market opportunities, collecting rejection slips and submitting to publishers, agents and editors who aren't interested in their work.

That's where the 2007 Writer's Market eliminates the hassles behind the business of writing. All the hard work of finding those publishing outlets - from magazines to book publishers, contests to small presses - has been done for you. Each market listing contains complete contact information, current market needs and pay rates. Some publishers even offer tips on how to get your work noticed and published by their house.

It doesn't matter if you've published dozens of books or you're just starting out with an idea for your first article, the listings show you everything you need to know before you submit your work. And there's even help to get you published packed in the in-depth articles also in the guide.

Answers to the burning questions like what's the trick to getting published, should you copyright your work, is self-publishing a good option, when you need an agent and so many more are covered. Plus, detailed help with query letters for both fiction and nonfiction writers gives you complete visuals on what works and what doesn't so you can construct a query letter that sells your writing.

There's even a great word count guidelines section on how to determine what type of work you're submitting. For freelancers, the "How Much Should I Charge?" section is a must for its per hour, per project and other rate advice.

Somehow the yearly Writer's Market guides outshine previous editions by keeping the content fresh, the articles informative and relevant to any writer's journey and the 1100+ pages are a must for any writer seeking publication. If you're a writer who wants to see your work in print, there's no better head start than using the 2007 Writer's Market.
