More misleading, or convoluted, than helpful, April 25, 2011
This review is from: 2009 Home Builders' Jobsite Codes: A Quick Guide to the 2009 International Residential Code (Spiral-bound)
In a sense, the author admits that he is almost writing his own code because "it hasn't been adopted by any jurisdiction", though he says it is based on the 2009 IRC.
I'm not sure why he did this. It isn't very well organized and jumps around the organization of code making it very limited as to usefulness for a contractor, or anyone, in building construction and code compliance. It is not comprehensive in any sense.
There are two far better publications out there, that follow the IRC pretty closely and provide some excellent commentary / amplification of the code, including great diagrams. They too are not "complete" in covering the whole code, but do a much better job of what they do cover. I'm not connected in any way with these other two publications; and, wish I had found them before I found this one.
The first addresses changes to the code, so is equally not comprehensive, but is a great quick reference for contractors that are busy and having to deal with the new codes.
It is:
"Significant Changes to the International Residential Code: 2009 Edition [Paperback]" put out in association with ICC.
The second is a great, very visual guide to the IRC, though here also it concentrates on the "major" aspects of the IRC and is not comprehensive (NOT covering the whole IRC, though a majority of it).
I've found it very useful in even being able to utilize many of the included diagrams and details in construction.
It is:
"Building Code Basics: Residential: Based on 2009 International Residential Code [Paperback]"
Short of one of these two alternates, a contractor would be better off getting the actual code instead of this ...... sorry author!
