Amazing bike for the price, ripe for future upgrades if desired.,

This review is from: 2009 Mongoose Teocali Comp (All Mountain) (Misc.)
I bought this bike about a month ago for about $720 before tax, a very reasonable price given the componentry and frame quality. It has proven to be a very capable and robust bike with very little need of upgrade off the showroom floor. I bought an XL frame for myself being 6'4" 210 lbs (36" inseam with shoes on) and am happy with the feel of the bike. The quality of the components is what I would call mid-range, and only really skimps on the front fork (no lockout, spring instead of air). Still, given the price I'm happy with the setup and won't need any upgrades right away. The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are responsive and grippy, and the shifters/derailers are good quality Shimano and won't need upgrading for quite some time. I'm also happy with the rear shock being an air unit with adjustable rebound, although I do wish it had lockout as well. The frame has 145mm of rear travel (excellent for the price range), and the Mongoose FreeDrive frame geometry is well-reviewed by enthusiasts. The FreeDrive frame geometry is effective in reducing pedal-bob during climbing and still feels supple in the bumps. Overall, this bike is a good frame geometry and mid-level suspension components for an excellent value. The shocks are easily upgraded to taste in the future if desired, and the rest of the components are ready to take a beating from most people. I plan to in the future upgrade the front fork to an air unit with lockout, and possibly upgrade the rear shock if I find that the current one isn't up to the task. Additionally, I will probably upgrade the front brake rotor to a larger unit (probably 203mm), fortunately brake rotor upgrades are an easy and inexpensive thing to do. Overall I feel this bike is an excellent value for what you pay for, and I personally think it's much easier to upgrade a shock fork than a frame so I'm happy with the compromises made with this bicycle. Pro's: - Excellent price point - Good quality hydraulic brakes - Good shifters, derailers - Excellent frame geometry (145mm travel!), suspension easily upgraded as desired. - Rear air shock is adjustable for rider weight and desired ride feel. - Front shock has adjustable travel, 130mm travel is nothing to sneeze at. Con's: - Front shock will probably be the first thing people want to upgrade since it is spring instead of air with no lockout. - Rear shock lacks lockout. - Front brake rotor seems a bit small for larger riders (180mm would have been more appropriate, like the 2010 and 2011 models). |
