Coin book ok, but examples of MS graded coins lacking,

Plenty of information available on all the issues of US coins. Less than Mint State graded coins are shown and their condition is described, but mysteriously, examples of MS graded coins are lacking. Most collectors pursue MS graded coins and the fine differences between MS - 60 to MS 68 would have been a valuable addition to the book to train the novice.

The eighth updated edition of David C. Harper, Editor's 2010 U.S. COIN DIGEST: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO CURRENT MARKET VALUES is an essential pick for any interested in coin collecting. It includes a CD of details and lay-flat binding as its pages reference all types of coins in a handy presentation perfect for quick reference. Values at various grades are included as well as statistics on mint numbers. Any coin collector needs this.

I will focus on two issues in this review. That should be enough to let the general public know how I feel about this publication.
1. Lincoln Pennies. the last update on mintage and prices was 2006. This is a 2010 price guide! In 2009 the 4 commemorative pennies that highlighted Lincoln's life are simply not mentioned. I feel that to expect to see the 2010 Shield penny is too much to ask, but the '09's? 2. Satin coins. In 2005 (!) the mint introduced the new Satin coin that were found in the uncirculated mint sets. They ran through... wait for it... 2010. These coins are not mentioned in this 2010 price guide. In my opinion, this book should not have been printed. It is outdated and worthless to anyone that is collecting modern coins. Nuff said.

The U. S. Coin Digest is a beautiful book! I really like the hardcover/ring binding which holds up well to frequent use. The only gripe I have is the bonus CD. If you look at the instruction pages for the CD at the back of the book, you get the impression that it includes the contents of the entire book in PDF format. Unfortunately, that is not the case. It contains other information not included in the book. I would have liked the book itself to have been included on the CD for the purpose of zooming in on the coin images. Other than that, the book is really nice.
