5.0 out of 5 stars Inclusive and Comprehensive!
I found this book to be well-researched and highly insightful. The author clearly has an excellent grasp on ancient cultures and how their spirituality reflected the world in which they lived. He uses this broad base to illustrate how the current current obsession with December 21, 2012 is likely a misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar, and that most cultures see life...

3.0 out of 5 stars Expecting something very different in this book
I was expecting something very different in this book which I won on LibraryThing. First off the title does not match what I found inside the book! I thought that the text of the book would discuss the ideas behind the 2012 "End of the World" Mayan calendar and other related "End of Days" predictions and how they relate to our modern world. What I found was a book that...

I found this book to be well-researched and highly insightful. The author clearly has an excellent grasp on ancient cultures and how their spirituality reflected the world in which they lived. He uses this broad base to illustrate how the current current obsession with December 21, 2012 is likely a misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar, and that most cultures see life as a great cycle. I was deeply impressed at his ability to tie together so many different cultures and find the fragments of similarity in each of them to make a greater whole.

A very interesting book! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A top pick for metaphysical studies collections, March 15, 2010
This review is from: 2012 and the Shift of the Ages: A Guide to the End of the World (Paperback)
Two years away, the mythology of 2012 has spiked interest higher than ever. "2012 and the Shift of Ages: A Guide to the End of the World" looks at the idea of cyclical history, saying that history, much like nature moves in cycles and that 2012 may be a changing of a said cycle With plenty to intrigue followers of the 2012 phenomena, "2012 and the Shift of Ages" is a top pick for metaphysical studies collections.

3.0 out of 5 stars Expecting something very different in this book, May 25, 2010
This review is from: 2012 and the Shift of the Ages: A Guide to the End of the World (Paperback)
I was expecting something very different in this book which I won on LibraryThing. First off the title does not match what I found inside the book! I thought that the text of the book would discuss the ideas behind the 2012 "End of the World" Mayan calendar and other related "End of Days" predictions and how they relate to our modern world. What I found was a book that discusses the similarities found in different religions and people (including the Mayans) and their concept of time, spirit and heaven. I think a better title would have been "Religious Concepts and the Shift of Ages" and leave the "2012" and "Guide to the End of the World out! The book did cover some interesting information and I learned much while reading it but the text did not live up to the title. If you are interested in history and the different spiritual concepts for the different levels of self-awareness, then this is a good book to read. If you are looking for the details behind the Mayan calendar and the 2012 event, this is not the book.
