No other book on my shelf that can inspire this many practical, profitable, career-building ideas in this same amount of time."

1.0 out of 5 stars WAY less useful September 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am extremely dissatisfied as for all practical purposes the 2012 edition is pretty useless. I have worked with WRITER'S MARKET for years, and NOT because of all the how-to articles. Let's face it - most working writers use the Writer's Market as a WORK TOOL: finding proper publishing & other writing opportunities. The most useful sections, for an aspiring BOOK writer, HAVE BEEN the (SEPARATE) "Book Publishers", "Canadian & International Publishers" & "Small Presses" sections, and JUST AS IMPORTANTLY, the "Book Publishers' Subject Index: Fiction & Nonfiction". I say "HAVE BEEN" because this current 2012 edition has: 1. LUMPED ALL PUBLISHERS INTO ONE SECTION - much more awkward to work with - & 2. ELIMINATED the SUBJECT INDICES COMPLETELY!! This makes it impossible to find publishers in any genre or subject without GOING THROUGH THE ENTIRE PUBLISHERS' SECTION ALPHABETICALLY!! Which is obviously VERY impractical! The first page of the BOOK PUBLISHERS section states: "When you have compiled a list of publishers interested in books in your subject area" etc. - They DON'T mention HOW to compile that list WITHOUT the SUBJECT INDEX!
Sad to see such a historically useful tool become of such lesser quality, and for no apparent intelligent or practical reason. Shame on you, Robert Brewer!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great resource... however... September 29, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a new writer who is trying to get a book published. I actually have an agent for one book I wrote... however he does not deal with the genre of this new book, so I figured I would try to see if I could get it published on my own.

I've had some really good luck with the publishers I found in this book. 2 of the 3 I've queried so far have asked to see the full manuscript after reading my proposal.

There is one thing I have to say about this book however... if you find a publisher or agent you are interested in... don't query the email they provide. Go straight to google and look them up.

There were a few publishers listed that ended up not being as described. One publisher they have listed as "Pays royalties" and says nothing about them being a pay to play publisher or a self-publishing unit. The website for that company states on it's main page: "We do NOT pay on a royalty basis. Author receives all of the profits or losses after expenses." (In other words, you pay to get your book out there).

So, I do recommend this book, because it gives you a great guide of at least where to look so you are not wasting your time trying to figure it out on your own... but I wouldn't hold it as gospel. If a publisher or literary agent looks interesting to you and seems to deal with your genre of writing, do a little more research before contacting them to make sure they really are right for your project.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete at best November 26, 2011
Format:Paperback
I have been reading the Writer's Digest Writer's Market for years. It appears that the latest version, Deluxe Edition was contracted out and though it contains some good articles for beginning or mid career writers, the listing section is so incomplete as to be only a minimal starting point for people looking for writing markets.

For example, the "personal computing" section has only ONE magazine listed. Go to any airport news stand and you'll see at least 30 magazines on personal computers, Macintosh and PC alike. Why are they all missing from this book? The Christian section is robust but how many professional writers want to write for evangelical church publications centered in the American south?

Likewise the book has little advice or help with online publishing where so much action is today.

Writer's Digest has for years seemed like a quaint and largely behind the times publication for a certain sub culture of writers. This book furthers that sense with it's vastly incomplete listings of potential publications.

The book does offer a free year membership to the online Writer's Market. I have yet to try that and hope it is more useful than this book.
