More About the Author

Leigh began his cartooning career in 1978 by establishing his own greeting card company, Rubes Publications. His first cartoon collection, the popular Notable Quotes musical cartoons, was published in 1981.

Rubes®, Leigh's syndicated cartoon, began in 1984, and the first paperback collection of Rubes® was published in late 1988. His most recent series of books include the award-winning "Wild Life of Love" and "The Wild Life of Cats." Several of his other books include "The Wild Life of Dogs," Pets, Cows, Farm Animals and "Rubes® Then and Now."

Originally self-syndicated, Rubes is now distributed by Creators Syndicate to more than 400 newspapers worldwide. As one of the most popular single-panel cartoons, Rubes® is a regular feature in SkyWest's United Express and American Traveler magazines.

Rubes appears in major daily metropolitan papers, such as the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the Toronto Sun, The Washington Times, the Sacramento Bee, the Houston Chronicle, The Orange County Register, and the Los Angeles Daily News.

Leigh also enjoys a busy schedule giving thought-provoking and entertaining cartoon presentations at conferences, as well as professional organizations all around the country.

In March 2010 Andrews and McMeel will be publishing "The Wild and Twisted World of Rubes", the 25th anniversary collection of Rube Cartoons!

I'm not a review writer, but I just love Rubes so much I figured it was time. I got this calendar for Xmas, as well as a deck of Rubes cards, and being overwhelmed with one of my most favorite strips ever, the least I can do for all the smiles and laughs Leigh Rubin has given me is write about how great it is.

I work for a newspaper that doesn't carry Rubes, and I would do ANYTHING to have it. It's one of the few things that I always have up in a browser tab so I can read it every single day. The only way this gets better is with more Rubes. I got that with this calendar (thanks to my great wife!), so now I have twice the Rubes every day.

Leigh Rubin is a genius. His work is brilliant. I compare it to The Far Side, but it is its own strip. At times it certainly invokes Gary Larson's twisted genius, but Leigh is his own man. The strip makes me at the very least grin, often laugh, and occasionally roar out loud.

My problem with calendars is that I want to read them like books -- straight through -- but I'm trying to resist. Sometimes I skip around to read a few panels, but mostly I keep myself going day by day.

If you've never read Rubes, this calendar is a great start. But I've read the strip for several years and we have Rubes books at home, so if you're like me and read plenty of Rubes, the calendar will help give you another daily fix of this fantastic strip.

this is the 3rd year we have used Rube's wacky calendar; he has a wonderful twisted sense of humor; would recommend to anyone.

This guy is seriously warped, and I mean that in a good way. Somehow, he has disconnected that little mechanism in his brain that otherwise would censor these outrageous thoughts. If you like humor about cows, elephants, giraffes and other fauna — and who doesn't? — you will absolutely love his stuff. I have to seriously resist the temptation to read ahead. That way, I have a kickstarter when I crawl out of bed at 3:45 a.m. to make it to my news desk by 4:30 a.m. Sometimes, just knowing that a new Rubes cartoon is waiting at the station is the only thing that drags me out of that comfortable bed. That, and the obnoxious alarm clock, but Rubes is a lot more fun.
Get one today, and if you have strange friends or relatives, buy a basket-full and pass them out. You'll be spreading some joy and weirdness in the world, and it will be a better place for it.

Rubes' witty and wonderful humor in this daily calendar kick-starts my day. And once I tear off the daily page from the calendar pad to move to the next day's cartoon, I even keep the old pages so I can use the blank back side for notes and get one more smile. My husband liked the calendar so much, he got one for his classroom. His high-school students make a beeline for his desk before each class starts to see what Rubes has to say today. Zoo in a Box is a great treat for all ages!

...and a great way to start each day. It's always good to wake up to some humor rather than the dreaded daily news. I've been getting Rubes for years, and they've been better than ever since they've come out in color! I keep a second calendar at work. Some co-workers used to come by every day to read them until I started giving them as gifts!

I have gotten the Rubes desk calendars for several years now. These cartoons are plastered over my refrigerator, friends refrigerators, in places of business and some have traveled over the country in the hands of various other cartoon fans. I get more fun out of this purchase than anything else I buy during the year.

I have this on my desk in my home office and always provides me with a quick laugh. The quality is good as I have had some of these daily desk calendars where it is almost impossible to remove the page without ripping or the calendar is so poorly bounded it falls apart.

Treat yourself to a daily dose of Rubes! This is my third Zoo-in-a-Box calendar and I still LOL at his weird, wacky, brilliant observational humor. If the worst comment the only under 5-star reviewer can make is "Oddball," I'd say not too shabby!
