1.0 out of 5 stars Needs updating badly, many web links old and not working
This book needs a serious updating. When I did find something that interested me, the chances were very good that the web links to their site were old and not working. Further searches for the company usually lead no where. Wouldn't recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start, December 13, 2004
Having been in the small business area just like Mr. Stephenson is talking about for many years, I feel that I can say his book is pretty good. Just a couple of points I want to add. Under Buying Sources, don't forget: thrift shops, particularily sales at thrift shops. Here one of them is half off every Friday. buying overseas. No you don't have to be big. You can find small suppliers of specialty items that are not imported into the US and bring them in.

Under selling venues:
don't forget Affiliate programs from companies like Amazon. They have a tremendous marketplace and handle all the paperwork.
And the internet is very, very important, go take a class on how to do a web site.

Under business organization:
e says that the biggest reason for incorporating is that you can greatly reduce your own personal liability. I've never found this. Any good lawyer that wants to sue you can frequently get around the corporate shield.
He also talks about the double taxation of a corporation, you file as a Subchapter S corporation and this doesn't happen. And you can create your own corporation, look for the book Ultimate Guide to Incorporating in any State.

Business License: Eventually you'll need one, but I have found that towns and cities are sticky about granting licenses to individuals who want to work out of their house. Furthermore enforcement is rare, and there are basically no penalties if you get caught - but you may want to check on this in your area.

Finally he lists some 202 things you can guy and sell for big profits. No question that in evey one of these things someone has developed his own business. But just pick one or two of these things, if they can be combined, you can scatter yourself too thin.

5.0 out of 5 stars How-to guide for anyone looking to make money as a middleman, February 10, 2005
Expererienced marketing consultant James Stephenson presents 202 Things You Can Buy And Sell For Big Profits, which is much more than a list of goods that anyone can buy and sell. Chapters address how to operate a buy-and-sell enterprise, where to find goods available (including wholesalers, manufacturers, auction sales, private sellers, and online auctions), legal issues with direct impact on a buy-and-sell enterprise, and much more. Each of the 202 items, including new toys, software, fitness equipment, licensed products and more is listed with a two-paragraph description and a point-by-point summary of where to buy, sell, and find resources concerning it. An excellent, basic and practical how-to guide for anyone looking to make money as a middleman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide to profits, November 18, 2004
I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating going into business, anyone who wants ideas about growing their business through diversification, or anyone who just wants to earn money on the side (students, retirees, homemakers, travelers, part timers). I found it to be written in a style that engages the reader and the material is easily adaptable for people of varying levels of background and experience. You learn what is needed to start your business, identify the best products for you to sell, and the best ways to resell these products (ebay, flea markets, auctions, shopping mall kiosks, from your own home, trade show, classified paper ads, and lots more). This book will not replace the hard work needed to succeed, but it is very comprehensive, user friendly, and provides lots of ideas and inspiration, which makes this book one of the best guides to profit out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a resource!, November 15, 2004
By
Ivan T. Walton (Carson City, Nevada) - See all my reviews
This book is packed with great ideas and an incredible amount of information. I found so many practical ideas and helpful suggestions in this book that I can't wait to get started buying and selling right away! The book has all the answers for people that want to make extra money buying and selling products. The book will teach you how to
· legally set up a business
· where to buy new and used products at low prices
· where and how to resell products for a profit
· market and sell your products on a shoestring budget
The book covers buying products at below cost prices direct from manufacturers, wholesalers, liquidators, distributors, and private sellers. It also provides valuable information about how to resell these products on ebay, auction sales, to collectors, through newspaper classified ads, fleamarkets, and garage sales. A few of the buy and sell products discussed include antiques, real estate, cars, fishing tackle, clothing, computers, toys, appliances, memorabilia, kites, pottery, and golf clubs. The book also includes hundreds of resources, manufacturers contact information, valuation guides and books, flea markets guides, and numerous related websites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good source tool, January 9, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This book is a handy source for just about every catagory of products you want to find to sell on or off the internet. Concise and resource filled, it is a valuable tool for sourcing a wide variety of goods. The only drawback is the unavoidable fact the many businesses come and go and some links are already dead in a book that is 2-3 years old. Overall it is a definite time and effort saver for finding most any type of product you can imagine selling. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Startup material, August 5, 2008

This review is from: 202 Things You Can Buy and Sell for Big Profits (202 Things You Can Buy & Sell for Big Profits) (Paperback)
James Stephenson hits another home run with this book. I run a part time business from home using some of his techniques. I also purchased another book that James Stephenson has authored "Home based Business Handbook" prior to picking this one up and this also is loaded with information. I agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the links were out of date, but you can also use any search engine to find what you need. If you are thinking about starting a home based business I highly recommend this book.
