5.0 out of 5 stars Reissue February 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Don't be fooled by the new cover or the previous review, this is a reissue of the very excellent live performance of Mahler's 9th made by the Berlin and Abbado in the Philharmonie in Berlin in September 1999 and NOT a different live performance "made in 2002" as stated by Grady Harp. The price is excellent and the performance is nearly as perfect an expression of this work as Karajan's live 1982 performance, also on Deutsche Grammophon but not to be confused with his studio recording which is also available.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLAUDIO ABBADO: Ave Atque Vale January 21, 2014
Format:Audio CD
One of the greatest conductors of our time has left us. For those fortunate enough to have been in the concert hall when Claudio Abbado conducted this live performance of the 9th symphony of Gustav Mahler his legacy will ring true. Here he conducts the Berlin Philharmonic in a performance in 2002 with a rapt audience in quiet reverence of the masters - composer and conductor - in a reading of Mahler's deeply moving 9th symphony. Though this was not the last recording Abbado made with DG (his last was in 2013) it certainly is one of the last live performances. And as with all live performances there is present that kind of magic that at times dissipates form studio recordings.

At any rate, this is but one of many treasures left in the discography of the wonder Claudio Abbado brought to the conducting platform. He will be deeply missed. Grady Harp, January 14
