From the Author

Remember 1990?

I do, like it was yesterday, because we were all incredibly excited about what was happening in communications. New technologies were emerging that revolutionized the way people connect and share information.

On the 20th anniversary of Ideahaus, I reflected on how much has changed since I got into the communications business, and as I discussed my revelations with colleagues with the same tenure I realized everyone had experiences of their own from their perspective to share as well.

I remember thinking, somebody should record this. And we did. The 20YEARS Project was based on issues selected by senior creative and communications professionals. The project is structured around a series of key questions that explores issues and experiences that all communications professionals encounter in their careers. It also shares with aspiring artists, writers, designers, producers, and strategists some critical insights that reflect the changing styles, strategy, and media of the last 20 years.

Why look back at 20 years of communications?

As we talked about Ideahaus' anniversary, our original studios, and who got started in the business at the same time, we realized that we all had to make a series of uninformed decisions when we got into the communications business. Some of the dilemmas we faced:
  • Join an agency or start my own?
  • Stick to my art or get a steady job?
  • Go client-side or stay in production?
  • Stay at home or get out of town?
When I asked my colleagues how it has all worked out for them, I began to uncover startling stories and endless retrospective insights, and I realized that we had to record this knowledge. Notable communications professionals from every discipline have been invited to participate in 20YEARS and to speak from their vantage points. Each panelist has been in the business for at least 20 years and are accomplished in their space.

Some key details to stress: First, this is about communications-all types of communications. Advertising, marketing, design, public relations, multimedia, events - all of them. When I started my agency, it was about communications. Twenty years later, it's about communications.

Traditionally, a lot of these things have been treated as though they are worlds apart. I believe this project will show how much more we all have in common, how we all fit together, how we are all really trying to do the same thing - and that's help somebody communicate to somebody else. - kp

The author of 20 Years Communications, Kevin Popovic is the authority in using social media for commercial marketing purposes. I'm aware that many companies pay for his expertise in this field. In his book, Kevin uses professionals from the marketing and advertising industry to make and confirm his thoughts regarding future trends in business. He has an easy writing style that doesn't require the book's chapters to be read in sequential order. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's trying to plan and navigate their company's future marketing efforts.20YEARS Communications: 20 Leaders, 20 Questions, 100's of Lessons

20YEARS Communications promises "100's of lessons" on its cover, and it absolutely delivers.

By mixing research with anecdotes, experiences, and insight from some of the communications industry's foremost thinkers and leaders, 20YEARS Communications provides an excellent resource for anybody looking to advance his/her career in this industry.

Even better, the book utilizes QR codes throughout the text which link to over two and a half hours of supplemental video, a strategy which not only diversifies the reading experience but also lends itself to a deeper understanding of the subject material. Coupled with numerous invitations to "join the conversation" and share one's own experiences on the book's website, 20YEARS is by far the most interactive book I have ever read.

If you want to prepare yourself for the future of communications, there is no better way than to stand on the shoulders of the giants who have been there before you. With 20YEARS, readers can learn from these figures, communicate with them, and apply their proven techniques/strategies to their own careers.

The future of communications is a bit intimidating, but with 20YEARS readers will feel more confident and better equipped to overcome any obstacles along the way.

As a marketing and communications professional, 20YEARS serves as a powerful reminder of the breadth of our industry. No longer just PR, or advertising, 20YEARS combines a multitude of perspectives that together show how far business communications have come, and how they will continue to evolve in the future.

20YEARS is as interactive as it is engaging. I found the 2.5+ hours of video helped shape the personalities of the experts introduced by Popovic. The QR codes encouraged me to join the conversation in a manner that was easy and effective.

I believe the book is of tremendous value, and would highly recommend for any marketing and communications professional, student, or business owner.

20 Years Communication is an insightful and clever read. Revisiting the last 20 years of the communication's industry not only takes you back in time from the moment's you've had "growing up" in the industry, but it excites you about what lies ahead. Kevin Popovic was able to capture the excitement that many marketers have with regards to their day job and their passion that exists for the industry. And the long list of contributors is a demonstration not only in how many different facets and roles there are within the marketing communication's industry, but also demonstrates the ability of the author to connect with these contributors in very personal ways - all of which is supported by fantastic video interviews.
