After the highly successful 20th anniversary tour in combination with their great new album Show Me How To Live, ROYAL HUNT are about to release their 20th Anniversary-Special Edition best of CD/DVD set which includes lots of bonus material.

The package will have 3 CDs and one DVD which will include the best Royal songs from all 11 albums, a brand new song plus 3 newly recorded acoustic version of three additional songs and a DVD including all the promotional videos shot by the band during their long ride.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great band, poor compilation March 6, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'll try to keep this short. I love Royal Hunt. They are one of my favorite bands. While not overly prog, I just love their neoclassical sound. This collection was a disappointment for me.

SONG SELECTION: Not stellar, but OK.

SOUND EDITING: OK this is bad. It sounds like if you just took the playlist of different songs from different albums on Itunes and burned to a CD. Since the songs on their original albums often ran over into their neighbors, the song changes are very abrupt. Very poorly done. The songs needed to be faded out, cut at different places, cross faded, or SOMETHING.

BONUS CD: Interesting and worthwhile if you are a completionist.

DVD: For me this is forgettable. I believe all of the videos on here are available elsewhere in more complete form.

PACKAGING: This is the real shame. I feel like this was put forward as a Special Edition / Premium product. The outer packaging is a long box like a DVD would come in. When you open that up you get one lousy insert card with a few pictures on it. There is no info about the band, the songs, the source albums, the band, etc. If this was really a 20 year retrospective they could have done a lot more with the "pack ins".

So in summary, I would suggest you skip this unless you are a Royal Hunt completionist. The tracks on the third disc may be worth getting but in retrospect I would have been better off just buying those tracks One By One (pun intended) digitally.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Danish melodic progressive metal band Royal Hunt has released a massive 4-disc retrospective titled 20th Anniversary - Special Edition. This set features 34 songs spread across three CDs plus a DVD that includes all of the band's promotional videos. In the band's two decades, they've gone from a relatively straightforward melodic rock/metal band to one of the more interesting progressive metal bands around, all the while maintaining a heavily keyboard oriented sound (thanks to chief songwriter and keyboardist Andre Anderssen). Along the way the band has featured some first rate vocalists in their ranks, including John West (ex-Artension), Mark Boals (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) and of course DC Cooper (ex-Silent Force).

After last year's very disappointing Heart of the City: Best of 1992 - 1999 collection, it's great to see a Royal Hunt retrospective like this one that truly covers the band's long career. The first two CDs in this set cover the band's eleven studio albums (with the occasional live track). They treat each album equally though, which was a failing of Heart of the City as well. For a number of Royal Hunt fans, the two original albums with DC Cooper on vocals - 1995's Moving Target and 1997's Paradox - are the band's best albums, so it would have been nice to see them represented more heavily than some of the band's more recent output. Still, there are some gems from the John West and Mark Boals albums, and this set does a good job capturing them. It's good to hear all of these songs, especially the early Henrik Brockmann tracks, cleaned up sonically for this set. The first 4-5 Royal Hunt albums are overdue for a good remastering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Music? outstanding. DVD? pointless. December 1, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If your a fan of Royal Hunt then this is an excellent retrospective of their 20 year span. Simply glorious. However, when you open the package the first thing you need to do is take out the DVD and throw it in the trash. It's horrible. I can't believe a band of this magnitude and talent would allow a piece of crap like this out on the market. I would have given 5 stars if this DVD were not included in the package.
